LOU REED in 1965 ! SOUNDSVILLE !
In 1965, Lou Reed was 23 years old and trying to find his way in the music business. He had only recently graduated from the Syracuse Collegeo Arts & Sciences and had moved back in with his folks in Freeport. He soon got some work writing songs for Pickwick International, a label in Long Island who specialized in budget and sound-alike cheap-o recordings. Working with several other young musicians, he earned $25 a week for his pop songs, and didn't retain any rights. That's how they kept the costs down.
While working there he churned out dozens of songs, which were then recorded by other nameless musicians for the Lps. On a few occasions, Lou can be heard on lead vocals. These early pre-VU moments are particularly precious / embarrassing.
It was working at Pickwick when Lou met John Cale and the real seeds of the Velvet Underground would be sewn. It was Cale who would later introduce Lou to methamphetamine hydro-chloride ("speed").
ON THIS ALBUM you get eleven songs that Lou Reed had a hand in writing. He's actually heard performing on two of these: "Cycle Annie," and "You're Driving Me Insane." The song "Cycle Annie" is a great window into the developing characters in song for Reed as he writes about a tough biker chick :
You'd better - - Watch out for little Cycle Annie watch out for little Cycle Annie Watch out for little Cycle Annie watch out for little Cycle Annie
She don't wear blouses, she don't wear skirts just tight blue jeans, boots and racin' shirts She tears up those beaches alongside Pasadena little Cycle Annie, they just don't come and any meaner You all better -
- Watch out for little Cycle Annie watch out for little Cycle Annie Watch out for little Cycle Annie watch out for little Cycle Annie
