This record would be as notable for its backstory as its sound, were "L'Amour" not so unique and beguiling a proposition. Apparently the work of a handsome stranger who turned up at an LA studio in a white Mercedes convertible with the master tapes, only to vanish without trace leaving little more than a bouncing cheque for the cover photo, this album languished in obscurity as a private-press release for three decades, only now finding its way back via the crate-digging circuit to the limelight it deserves. A soft-focus gem, "L'Amour" - all radiant synth washes, piano balladry and ethereal croon - is a gossamer tapestry of abstract folk-pop, as redolent now of Angelo Badalamenti as it is of Antony and The Johnsons, and even predating the atmosphere of Arthur Russell's "World Of Echo" by a full three years. Eternal summer evening salvation.
