Come On Die Young was an enormously important record for this young band on its release in 1999, proving them a uniquely powerful force not only in UK indie but worldwide, forging a gloriously dynamic, abstract yet effortlessly melodious form of (mostly) instrumental music that engaged the emotions just as much as the cerebellum. Recorded with Dave Fridmann, it's a gloomy masterpiece of cinematic melancholy and heavily amplified drama, and thus much deserving of this bumper expanded box set. Comprising demos and out-takes from this fruitful period, along with an entire live show that chronicles this arresting outfit at the peak of their powers, this is an essential portrait of a revolutionary musical force that proved themselves just as adept with near-silence as screaming noise.
