Hi, up for auction here is a seldom seen single - an English 7” white label promotional pressing of ‘Don’t Turn Me Away’ by Rexy, (a.k.a. Rex Nayman). I vaguely remember this getting some limited airplay when it was released in 1980 and it was certainly a minimalist synth/vocals affair! From the limited information out there, it seems she released a couple of singles (including this one) and an album before disappearing?!
(*Please note, the photos used are of the actual record for sale.)
I’ve had this for a quite a while, never played it myself and just rediscovered it during a sort out. Can’t recall how I came to have this; best guess that it came with a job lot of singles, etc, that you used to be able to pick up from local record shops, (in Nottingham for me) such as the much missed ‘Selectadisc’ or ‘Rob’s Records‘, etc.
Anyway, as can be seen from the photos, this is a white label promo/demo copy with just ‘Rexy’ and a (circled) letter ’P + ã 1980’ handwritten in black ballpoint pen on the ‘A’ side. *There’s also a small ‘yellow dot’ sticker on the left side of the label. Looks like someone (not me!) tried to remove it…then gave up before sticking it back down. Don’t think there’s any significance to this ‘sticker? The ‘B’ side label is completely blank.
Unfortunately, my old Pioneer record deck has recently given up the ghost, so I can’t test play this single. I’ve looked on the excellent ‘Discogs’ site and according to the info from them - and the matrix #’s on the run out grooves, they identify it as the U.K. pressing.
The track listing then would be/ is:
Side ‘A’
Don’t Turn Me Away
Side ‘B’
Rexy’s Russian Blues
The numbers on the run out’s are as follows:
Matrix / Runout (Side A): *ALIEN + 12 + A, *OR, *TY-CBS (* In the 1 o clock, 6 o clock & 4 o clock positions respectively.)
Matrix / Runout (Side B): *ALIEN + 12 + B, *OR. (* In the 11 o clock, & 4 o clock positions respectively.)
As for the condition, I’m a collector myself and pretty critical when rating items, having said that, visually at least it ‘looks’ to be very good ‘plus’ The most obvious thing to note about the condition is a small ’ding’ on the very bottom outer edge in the six (6) o clock position. This is not a crack, neither has it caused distortion. I don’t know if it occurred at the factory or was knocked/ dropped? Its definitely been there since I’ve owned it though. *Please see photos - it does look more pronounced on the ‘A’ side and does show to a lesser extent on side ‘B’. The good news is that this fault is confined to the run in grooves and ends on both sides before it hit’s the actual ‘tracks. If you look at the very edge of the record it shows a light beige/off white colour where the black of the vinyl has scraped away (approximately 4 or 5mm in length) just where the ‘fault’ is.
Other than that, the vinyl retains its glossy sheen on both sides with no obvious scratches, scrapes, etc. No signs of warping, vinyl lays perfectly flat and no spindle wear/marks either. In fact, the ‘A’ side spindle hole still has remnants of vinyl on it left over from its pressing!! The plain paper labels are clean with no rips/tears, etc. A couple of very small light brown spots of ‘foxing’ evident on either side, the most obvious one being on the inner ring of side ‘B’. There’s no ingrained dirt or dust on the vinyl, but could certainly benefit from a good clean. Unfortunately, my record cleaning kit has also seen better days since being loaned out, so I’ll leave all that to the potential new owner. Overall rating on the single is a firm and ‘picky’ 7 out of 10.
It’s housed in its original generic thin white paper sleeve; still solid with no wear-through or repairs on the three (3) solid sides. A small tear on one side at the centre hole and light creasing. Easily replaceable of course if desired.
There you have it, a definite 34 year old curio for the Rexy/synth pop collector/aficionado.
