Simply put, a mono recording collects each channel of sound—the vocals, the instrumentals—and pans them into a single track, as opposed to stereo sound’s multiple tracks and more expansive feel. The sonic result is analogous to black-and-white vs. color film: mono is more primitive, perhaps, but somehow also more inviting.
