Curiously singular and confident for a newcomer, the songs of Azniv Korkejian inhabit a place of understated charm and blissful tranquillity - stylistically in thrall to the folk and country of previous decades yet with a beguiling melancholia and sultry charm that makes them far more than museum pieces or testimonies to Laurel Canyon retro chic. The exquisite string arrangements here are ornate without being overly fussy, whilst Korkejian's voice is laid-back but honey-rich - all in all, the lazy, blissful aura of these small-hours serenades is enough to make most of Bedouine's contemporaries sound as if they're trying just that little bit too hard.
