JUAN HIDALGO / JESUS VILLA-ROJO / TOMAS MARCO / JOAN GUINJOAN / RAMON BARCE / CLAUDIO PRIETO

 MUSICA ESPANOLA CONTEMPORANEA LP

EMEC / Movieplay

Very rare contemporary avant-garde album from the mid-70's from Spain, featuring the works of Juan Hidalgo, Jesus Villa-Rojo, Tomas Marco, Joan Guinjoan, Ramon Barce and Claudio Prieto.

Some info on the release:  Rare original issue, released in Spain sometime in the late 70's on the great EMEC-Movieplay label in the "Musica Espanola Contemporanea" series (Juan Hidalgo, Miguel Angel Coria, Tomas Marco, Carmelo Bernaola, Andres Lewin Richter, Ramon Barce, etc.).

Jesús Villa-Rojo is one of the most dynamic figures of Spanish contemporary music. His long endeavour as a clarinettist and his study of new concepts of the sonorities of his instrument, have inspired the creation of dozens of new works in Spain and abroad, premièred either by himself or by the Laboratory for Interpreting Music (LIM), the ensemble he founded in 1975 and has directed ever since. His research activities, especially in the area of graphic notation, have been explored in a number of publications. Also in the early days, a founding member of the legendary Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. As a cultural director he has organized and co-ordinated a host of musical events, among them programmes for the LIM (Madrid), the BBK/Contemporary Music Festival (Bilbao) and the Alicante International Festival, as well as managing the Centre for the Diffusion of Contemporary Music. Born in Brihuega, Guadalajara, in 1940, and educated in Madrid and Italy, Villa-Rojo’s compositions, almost two hundred works, covering all genres, have been widely performed in Europe and America. His style, based during the 1970s on experiments with sonorities and certain forms of aleatoric music, has subsequently concentrated on refined expressiveness in which conceptual aspects assume particular significance. Throughout his career he has received many important accolades including the National Prize for Music, the Gran Premio Roma, and the Béla Bartók and Koussevitzky Awards. Known for releases on Cramps Diverso, Edition Rz, Dial Discos, Movieplay, Edipan and others.

After studying piano and composition in Barcelona and Paris with Nadia Boulanger and Bruno Maderna, in 1957 Juan Hidalgo participates in the XII Internationale Ferienkurse Für Neue Musik festival in Darmstadt with his work "Ukanga", a serial-structural composition for five chamber ensembles. With this piece, Hidalgo becomes the first Spanish composer to take part in the Darmstadt festival. In 1958 Juan Hidalgo met in Darmstadt American composers John Cage and David Tudor who were crucial to his musical and career development.  Founder in 1964 of the ZAJ group with Walter Marchetti, Ramón Barce, and later Esther Ferrer and the writer José Luis Castillejo. ZAJ was a brave exponent of Spanish neodadaism with influences of zen and Marcel Duchamp vision of the arts. It is very interesting to pay attention to the similarities in philosophy and aesthetics between ZAJ and the Japanese Gutai and American Fluxus artistic movements.  One of his most interesting collaborations with John Cage took place in 1978 when Cage and fellow composer Walter Marchetti prepared a musical ride on a train, full of microphones, monitors and sounds directed by Cage himself. The people on board would hear the train's very noises enriched by an additional mix of local music and sounds, giving an audio-portrait of each stop.  Juan Hidalgo is considered as one of the most creative artists of the Spanish avant-garde since the 60’s and he has been active in other artistic fields such as poetry, photography, installation art, postcard art, print media, and performances, participating in numerous international exhibitions and festival.
