Isham Jones (1894 - 1956) was born in Coalton, Ohio and grew up in Saginaw, Michigan, where he formed his first band. In 1917, he composed the popular World War I song "You're In The Army Now". Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he led one of the most popular dance bands in the country. He recorded for Brunswick, then Victor, and finally for Decca. His Victor era was short, from November, 1932 to July, 1934. However, his recordings for Victor are considered to be some of the best arranged and performed dance band recordings in the era of the Great Depression. When he left Decca in 1936, his band was taken over by band member Woody Herman.
"China Boy" was written in 1922. It was initially popular with Dixieland style bands. The song charted at least 4 times including the recordings of Paul Whiteman, Red Nichols, Isham Jones, and Benny Goodman. The latter featured the song in his 1938 Carnegie Hall performance.
"Dallas Blues" was written in 1912 and is claimed, by some, to be the very first published blues tune. Others give the credit to two other 12 bar blues tunes: "I Got the Blues" (1908) and "Oh, You Beautiful Doll" (1912). "Dallas Blues" was written as a instrumental (as it is performed by Isham Jones). The lyrics were not composed until 1918. The song has been covered by multiple artists, including Louis Armstrong.
