Up for sale is a FANTASTICALLY RARE, 10 inch, 78 RPM record, on a very obscure label, featuring a great African American string bass and tuba player. It features two blues songs, one of which specifically references the then current Korean War! My research reveals no evidence that this record has ever come up for sale before!

The lyrics of "Soldiers' Blues" are quoted in
The Truman and Eisenhower Blues: African-American Blues and Gospel Songs, 1945-1960, by Guido van Rijn. They are as follows (
emphasis added):
Wonder, pretty baby, baby, do you ever think of me? Lot of reason to worry, baby, is because I'm across the deep blue sea.
When I think about you baby, mmm, the chills run up and down my spine, Yes I wanna see you, baby, mmm, I almost just lose my mind
As I roam these bloody hills, body cold and full of chills, I wanna see you, baby, sometimes I think I never will.
Blues in Korea, broken as a a man can be, Won't you write a letter, baby? "Daddy, please hurry home to me?"
I've got rocks for my pillow, the cold ground is my bed, Wanna see you baby, yes, I almost lose my head.
Got the blues, got the blues, won't you write me, pretty baby? "Daddy, please, hurry home to me". I was unable to find out anything about vocalist, and co-composer, Duke Upshaw. George Sylvester (Red) Callender, however, was a major figure in blues, jazz and other genres of music. He was born in Virginia in 1916 and made his recording debut at age 19 with Louis Armstrong's band. Throughout the 1940s, he recorded with such luminaries as Nat King Cole, Erroll Garner, and Charlie Parker. He became one of the first black musicians to work in the Hollywood (Los Angeles) commercial studios. Starting in the mid 1950s, he was one of the earliest modern jazz tuba soloists. He recorded for Art Tatum, played the Monterey Jazz Festival with Charles Mingus, joined James Newton's avant garde jazz quintet (as a tubist), and was a regular member of Cheatham's Sweet Baby Blues Band. He reached the top of the British Pop charts as a member of B. Bumble and the Stingers. Callender died in 1992.
According to the
Encyclopedia of the Blues, by Edward M. Komara, Bayou Records operated in the first half of 1953. (By June, it had folded.) It was actually located in Hollywood, California and was owned by Franklin Cort, who had previously worked for such record labels as: Exclusive, Recorded in Hollywood, and Swingtime. Other artists who appeared on the fewer than 20 singles released by Bayou included: Jesse Allen, Dave Bartholomew, Allen "Fat Man" Matthews, and Big Jay McNeely.
