It's been some time since we heard the Smoke Fairies' particular brand of non-nymphish, blues-tinged rock. 2014 saw them unveil the modern Christmas affair that was 'Wild Winter', closely followed by contributions to Public Service Broadcasting's 'The Race For Space', on which they managed to stamp real personality onto work from one of the most unique outfits working in music, by way of providing non-sampled vocals.

'Darkness...' sees the troupe get back to their own agenda with another collection of chilly tracks perfect for colder months. A logical next step, perhaps. The album packs plenty of grit - 'Disconnect', 'Out Of The Woods' and 'Elevator' are rhythmic triumphs guaranteed to get heads nodding, to put it mildly. But then the otherworldliness that has long separated these from many other guitar outfits is also here in generous spades, with songs such as 'Chew Your Bones' adding a macabre, ethereal air.
