It takes real confidence to tackle a household classic, perhaps even more if that classic was written by a 20th century musical luminary who was also a close friend. Given how delicate and light Suzanne Vega's treatment of Lou Reed's 'Take A Walk On The Wild Side' is, with its redemptive soaring guitar chords, confidence is certainly an apt word here - she really does make it her own.

One of the standout moments on this live album, recorded at New York's Cafe Carlyle, it has some stiff competition, with Vega's natural air of cool, urban sophistication front and centre throughout the setlist. Comprising anthems and half-forgotten gems alike - 'Tom's Diner' sidles up next to 'Ludlow Street' - there's even a startling rendition of 'New York Is My Destination', from her own one-woman play about Southern Gothic novelist Carson McCullers, Lover, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers.
