Cat: WELLE 107. Rel: 24 May 21
Jazz
Tenor saxophonist Billy Harper played with many of the greats of the hard bop and post-bop era, and they in turn often guested on his solo albums. He made loads of those over the course of his career, with 1975's Black Saint being arguably the most revered. Joined by bassist David Friesen, drummer Malcolm Pinson, pianist Joe Bonner and trumpeter Virgil Jones, Harper delivered an album in which his expressive, energetic, fluid and occasionally near breathless solos took centre stage on a trio of epic, post-bop workouts. The real star of the show remains 21-minute flipside 'Call of the Wild and Peaceful Hearts', which moves from quiet contemplation to riotous intensity via some genuinely breezy and attractive middle sections.
