Cat: NYCT 7074. Rel: 8 Nov 21
International
It was back in 2017 that Malamanya first burst onto the scene with a self-titled debut album that paid tribute to the traditional sounds of Afro-Latin music in Cuba and the Caribbean. They have remained firm favourites ever since and always capture the essence of that sound and its evolution into the sound of the streets of New York in the 70s. The nine-piece orchestra out of Minneapolis now returns with 'La Tormenta,' a suer example of modern-day salsa durango. It is led by the fiery vocals of Cuban immigrant Zusel Balbin with dual trombones, a nice salsa groove that sways to and fro and plenty of fine instrumentals. On the flip, 'Frio' is another gem with Luis Ortego Castrellon leading the vocals.
