JETHRO TULL

Jethro Tull were a unique phenomenon in popular music history. Their mix of hard rock; folk melodies; blues licks; surreal, impossibly dense lyrics; and overall profundity defied easy analysis, but that didn't dissuade fans from giving them 11 gold and five platinum albums. At the same time, critics rarely took them seriously, and they were off the cutting edge of popular music since the end of the 1970s. But no record store in the country would want to be without multiple copies of each of their most popular albums.

This box probably seems to be an unweildy hodgepodge to the casual fan, but to Tull fans like me it was like manna from heaven. A HUGE box full of manna! There were a few non-album tracks that I knew from B-SIDES back in the day (I still remember special-ordering singles to get little gems like "Strip Cartoon" or "Summerday Sands") but this was beyond all expectations. Most of this stuff I'd never even HEARD of! And it was all classic Tull for the most part, which was wonderful in 1988, when they were weren't really "on the ball" as much. Listening to these albums brought back that feeling of wonder and joy I used to get back in the day when each new album would come out. I'd forgotten how that felt! Also, I felt that many of the outtakes were better than tracks that made it onto the albums. I think one of Ian Anderson's few faults is that he's sometimes not a good editor of his own music. I've noticed this a lot with all the reissues and their bonus material. This was (ha ha) pure magic for hardcore Tull freaks so that's the qualifier for my 5 star rating. If you're not super-into them though, I'd say probably avoid it. The first great unloading from the store of extraneous treasures!...(AllMusic User Review)
