Face Value is the debut album by British singer and drummer Phil Collins, lead voice of the band Genesis, released in 1981. The album includes the first hit "In the Air Tonight", whose dark mood is inspired by the consequences of the first marriage with his wife Andrea. Face Value is also relevant for the musical choices that Phil Collins took when composing it. Even so, having played progressive rock for 10 years, aside from playing jazz fusion, his biggest hidden influence was the so-called "Motown" genre, started in the 1960s in the US. During the recordings of the demos that later became the songs on the album, Collins learned to play what would become his second favorite instrument, the piano. Something that he has almost never done in his career has been to sing and play drums at the same time, not because he cannot but because, according to Collins, it is visually messy on stage, but it was different in the case of the piano. Phil Collins recorded vocals, drums, and also piano on each song.
