If this is your first encounter with Blurt then where the devil have you been, and what has been keeping you? The no wave, post punk and jazz rock outfit founded by poet, saxophonist and puppeteer (no, seriously) Ted Milton and brother Jake should fly under no radar, given they represent the vanguard of British countercultural 1980s creativity.

Still going today, with the last studio album, Beneath Discordant Skies, landing in 2015, they combine jaunty, ska-esque rhythms with brass band-ish notes, avant garde experimentalism and the aforementioned frontman's half-screaming, half-crying, often-barely-decipherable and utterly inimitable lyrical style. Their music is challenging and yet somehow completely logical and enjoyable, from the harsher tones of 'Get' and the sweat-pit inducing 'The Fish Needs A Bike', to the cool swagger of 'The Ruminant Path'.
