Alexander Felman Thaviu, Chicago
BIRTH 1876
Cherkas'ka, Ukraine
DEATH 15 Nov 1945 (aged 68–69)
Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA
Alexander F. Thaviu, a Russian Jewish emigrant, was a contractor of musicians for band and theater concerts in the Midwest
Thaviu was born Alexander Tevye Feiman in Zvenigorodka, Ukraine, in 1875. He emigrated to the United States as a teenager, eventually settling in Chicago. He played cornet and cello in several Chicago-area groups before forming his own band in 1905. By this point, he had adopted the name "A.F. Thaviu," combining an anglicized "Tevye" with his remaining two initials. Thaviu's early band was not exactly a standard wind band; it included at least four strings and a vocalist. His first wind band was the nineteen-piece Thaviu's Oriental Band, which performed in Turkish costume, although their reper-toire was primarily standard American wind band fare (a sample program includes two numbers out of eleven labeled "Oriental," and also includes chautauqua staples such as the sextet from Lucia and quartet from Rigoletto). After 1910, Thaviu's band was no longer advertised as "Oriental" and had abandoned the Turkish costumes in favor of the pseudo-military uniforms common to professional wind bands of the time. Thaviu's band enjoyed a long career in chautauqua and, after divesting from the movement, continued to perform year-round at state fairs, amusement parks, and many venues in their home base of Chicago.
Chautauqua was an adult education and social movement in the United States, highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s. The Chautauqua brought entertainment and culture for the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians, showmen, preachers, and specialists of the day.[1] Former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is "the most American thing in America."

A Quick NOTE ON GRADING AND SHIPPING:
As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS.
If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING.
Quick note on grading:
The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately
When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.
These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.
