From the first spine-tingling tones of 'Air Raid', Evolution is marked out as something special even within a catalogue as revered as Blue Note's. In terms of trombonist Grachan Moncur III, it's notable as his sole record as bandleader, and on the strength of the whole set it's a shame he never got the chance again. Recorded in 1963, Moncur linked up with Jackie McLean on sax, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson bringing the magic on vibes, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Tony Williams on drums. There's tension and release, flights of fancy and a mysterious mood prevailing throughout - jazz to get truly absorbed in as you follow the thread laid down by this magnificent ensemble.
