Kurenko, Maria: Russian soprano (16 Aug 1890-1980) debuted in 1914 and at the Bolshoi in 1918. She lived in the US after 1925 and became a leader in recording and concertizing Russian art songs. A very long career.

Maria Kurenko has an extremely agile voice, a well-rounded tone that became even more full as her career progressed, and the range of her repertoire--from Mozart to Chopin--is dizzying. If she is at her best with Mussorgsky, she is at her most unique with Mozart, and there is no singer--ever--who could add coloratura so beautiful, complex, and emancipated as to warrant its sometimes being called a cadenza.

Kurenko, Maria, soprano, * August 16, 1890 Tomsk (Siberia), † May 17, 1980 New York; she studied law at the University of Moscow, but at the same time had her voice trained by the pedagogue Umberto Mazetti. In 1916 she made her debut at the Kharkov Opera House as Antonida in Glinka's Life for the Tsar. In 1918 she came to the Bolshoy Theater in Moscow, but left Russia in 1920. Since 1921 she stayed mostly in North America. In 1924 she sang the role of Parasha in the American premiere of Stravinsky's opera Mavra at the Philadelphia Opera. From 1924 to 1926 she was engaged at the Riga Opera House. In 1926 she gave a series of concerts in Paris. In her recitals she was often accompanied on the piano by the Russian composer Alexander Gretchaninoff, who dedicated several of his songs to her. In the USA she was primarily a concert singer, where she was best known as an interpreter of Russian folk and art songs. In 1927 she sang Rosina in the "Barber of Seville" in a single performance at the Chicago Opera. She later made a guest appearance at the Hollywood Bowl and again in 1936 at New York's Lewison Stadium as Antonida in Glinka's "Life for the Tsar". In 1955 she had records recorded that presented her voice unaltered.

Records: Electrically recorded Columbia records, also featured on Lyrichord, Capitol (songs by Rachmaninoff) and Allegro Royale. Victor came out with an album each with songs by Gretchaninoff (accompanied by him) and one with Tchaikovsky songs. 1950-51 Victor published an LP with songs by Rachmaninoff and a second with songs by Stravinsky, the latter with his daughter Soulina Stravinsky as an accompanist.

[Addendum] Kurenko, Maria; In 1921 she went on a concert tour through Finland, Poland and the Baltic States and then lived in Riga until 1926. In 1925 she appeared as a guest in Berlin. A very successful concert in Paris in 1926 led to an engagement in the USA, where she made her stage debut in Los Angeles in 1927 as Lakmé von Delibes. In 1934 (not 1924) she sang in Philadelphia in the American premiere of Stravinsky's "Mavra". Her stage roles also included Manon von Massenet, Traviata and Gilda in "Rigoletto". Since 1947 she was a professor at the Juilliard School in New York.

A Quick NOTE ON GRADING AND SHIPPING:

As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS.

If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.
