Sonny Rollins Newk's Time LP Blue Note King Record Co. 1978 Press #GXK 8089 Japan Import E+ to NM! NO Reserve... RARE! With Wynton Kelly and Philly Joe Jones. Originally released in 1957 as BLP 4001.
Part of the Blue Note Japan Masterpiece Selection 150 Series. Japanese Jazz reissue series, catalog #'s from GXK 8001 to GXK 8150, issued from 1977 to 1980. Titles were chosen from the 1500 series, 4000 series, and even BN-LA series. All the series titles represent which Blue Note Records albums / artists were very popular and highly acclaimed in Japan at that time.  The Japanese name for the series is ブルーノート名盤150選.
"Newk's Time" is Sonny Rollins third album for Blue Note Records, recorded in 1957 and released in 1959. The title of the album is a reference to Rollins' nickname "Newk", which is apparently based on his resemblance to Don Newcombe, a pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers.[6] "Namely You" was taken from the Broadway show Li'l Abner. The release marked the beginning of Blue Note 4000 series: from this album on, the releases would be catalogued as "BLP 4..." (mono) and "BST 84..." (stereo). Rollins' version of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top", from the musical Oklahoma!, takes the form of exchanges between the drums of Philly Joe Jones and the saxophonist.
