MAGIC SAND

The track 'Get Ready To Fly' was also released as a 45 single under the group name 'The Hooterville Trolley', with the song titled 'No Silver Bird'. However, there is no relation between the two "groups" other than the Hooterville Trolley song appearing on the Magic Sand LP. Magic Sand was a studio assembled project & the Hooterville Trolley track was included by the producer without consent or knowledge of the Hooterville Trolley band or the original songwriter. Listen To What's Not Being Said is a recording by the band Mudd. There was definitely no band called Magic Sand but unlike normal compilations the original artists are not listed. It is believed that Al Klein assembled the album & sold it to Uni with the intention of passing it of as the work of an unsigned band...(AllMusic)

This is quite a varied album. The stand out track is the psychedelic Get Ready To Fly. The title cut is a country-influenced instrumental jig and there's quite a lot of country banjo on Down On My Knees and The Good Lord Willing. The blues is an evident influence on Thinking Out Loud and You'd Better Be Ready. Worth a spin. You may be interested to know that Get Ready To Fly is the same song that was released by The Hooterville Trolley as No Silver Bird. The Hooterville Trolley 45 lists an address in Mississippi on the label, which may be the home state of 'both' groups - especially as a another 45 produced by Tom Bee was by the Mississippi The Trademarks. Tom Bee could also be the same guy that led / produced Xit and Lincoln St. Exit and had earlier played in Fe Fi Four Plus 2, but that would imply that they were from Arizona or New Mexico. As a further twist in this bands convoluted history, the same A. Klein and V. Gabrielle listed as Magic Sand personnel are also the main songwriters (along with a "Tom G") for Mud on Mudd on their self-titled album. Mud on Mudd were a septet (no personnel listed explicitly) and although the music isn't really psych, it is very good rock-soul. The album is split between Traffic, Sam and Dave, and Beatles covers; and a handfull of well-written originals. They also completely transform Porter Waggoner's country classic Satisfied Mind into a funky rocker (!). The most interesting thing is that both albums came out on UNI, and the catalog numbers indicate that they were released very close to each other. Was this in fact the same band? A UNI-manufactured studio group? Perhaps A.Klein and V.Gabrielle were staff writers?...(Fuzz Acid & Flowers)
