Though this may be his debut album, Jalen Ngonda is already a stalwart figure in the contemporary international soul scene. Having made a slow but sure name for himself prior to the COVID-19 lockdowns - in which myriad gigs would still go ahead in a whirl of confusion and dread at the notion of something inevitably disastrous coming - Ngonda's new album Come Around And Love Me seems to channel a feeling we all felt when disaster finally struck: that of making do with a change to "normalcy", and finding new capacities for loving within it. Across its ten tracks, we hear the classic sounds of Motown, Stax, and Philly, as Ngonda's charming alto meshes effortlessly with his guitar talents and songwriting abilities.
