En 1961, La Sonora Santanera fue invitada a un baile escolar donde conocieron a una joven estudiante con deseos de cantar con la agrupación, su nombre Sonia López, quien conquisto a la agrupación por la tesitura de su voz, carisma, buena conexión con el público y un estilo único al interpretar la música tropical, se integró al grupo y permaneció como la voz de la agrupación por un tiempo logrando grandes éxitos, razón por la cual se ganó el título de La Chamaca de Oro.
