Nach Erfahrungen in verschiedenen kleineren - und mehr oder weniger erfolglosen - Combos und Engagements als Studiogitarristen bei Größen wie Aretha Franklin und Percy Sledge veröffentlichten Gregg und Duane Allman mit ihrer neuen Band 1696 ihr Debütalbum "The Allman Brothers Band". Obwohl sie das Blues-Revival um ein paar Jahre verpasst hatten, klangen sie wie keine andere Band ihrer Zeit. Andere Musiker konnten um die musikalische Virtuosität und das perfekte Zusammenspiel der beiden Brüder nur beneiden. Duane Allman galt zu Recht als einer der besten Rock- und Bluesgitarristen der Welt.
