A series of great  Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Czech and Yugo-Slav  Records from early G&Ts to World War II recordings on 78 rpm Victrola Records

Meet the first international recording star, leading coloratura soprano of the Imperial Mariinsky Theater of Opera and Ballet, who apparently never sang outside of the greater and lesser Russia

Not only is Michailowa one of the great coloratura sopranos on record, but these "close miked" early G&Ts reproduce the voice and the solo instrument in stunning clarity. A flute or violin never sounded as good on an acoustic record.

Since 1877, the class of Cesare Ciardi was taken over by the German flutist and soloist of the Imperial Theaters Karl Waterstraat , whose students - the first famous Russian professional flutists Stepanov, Fyodor Vasilyevich (flutist) Fyodor Stepanov and Alexander Semyonov - played on Boehm system flutes.

From 1882, Buchner's class at the Moscow Conservatory was taken over by the German flautist, Bolshoi Theater soloist Wilhelm Kretschmann , who also introduced training in the Böhm system flute . Kretschman trained the first galaxy of major Russian flutists, such as V. Leonov, V. Tsybin , N. Bakaleinikov, F. Levin , A. Stuchevsky, V. I. Glinsky-Safronov , G. Ya. Madatov and others.

Michailowa, Maria Alexandrovna, soprano, * 3.6.1866 (according to other sources 1864) Charkow, † 18.1.1943 Perm (then Molotov) in the Urals; she came from a Russian-Dutch family, her mother's family name was van Puteren. She began her training with Mme Groewing-Wilde in Charkow and at the Conservatory of St. Petersburg, then a student of St. Yves-Bax in Paris and of Rauzzoni in Milan. Debut in 1892 at the Marienskij Theater (the court opera) of St. Petersburg as Queen Marguerite in Meyerbeer's »Huguenots«. There she sang a small role in the world premiere of Tchaikovsky's opera "Jolanthe" on December 18, 1892, and the role of Elektra in the world premiere of Taneyev's "Oresteia" trilogy on October 29, 1895. Throughout her career she stayed in St. Petersburg, where she was celebrated by the society of Tsarist Russia. She has made guest appearances in Moscow, Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa and other Russian cities. Her major roles were Ludmilla in Glinka's "Ruslan and Ludmilla", Antonida in "Life for the Tsar", Lakmé, Micaela in "Carmen", Tamara in Rubinstein's "Demon", Gilda in "Rigoletto", the Juliette in "Roméo et Juliette", the Nannetta in Verdi's "Falstaff" (which she created for Russia in St. Petersburg in 1894), the Amina in "La Sonnambula" and the Marguerite in the "Huguenots". She became world-famous for her records, which have been released since 1900 and aroused general admiration. Nevertheless it never succeeded in persuading the artist to leave Russia; only in 1903 she made a guest appearance in Prague. Oscar Hammerstein tried in vain to sign her to the Manhattan Opera House in New York, which he founded. However, she is said to have undertaken a concert tour of Japan in 1907. In 1912 she said goodbye to the Marienskij Theater in St. Petersburg as Antonida in Glinka's "Life for the Tsar". In 1913 or 1914 she is said to have undertaken another concert tour in Russia. She later lived in Leningrad. Apparently she ran into financial difficulties after the October Revolution; In 1921 she asked the management of the Leningrad Opera for help. Nothing is known about her further living conditions. During the siege of Leningrad by German troops in World War II, she was evacuated to Perm in the Urals, where she died in 1943. - Your voice belongs to the most beautiful thing that has survived from the early days of the record; Confident mastery of technology and stylish art of presentation are balanced in their interpretations.

Numerous records, the oldest still Berliner Records (1900-01), then G & T (also since 1900), Columbia, Lyrophon, HMV and Pathé; a recording on Amour Records.

A Quick NOTE ON GRADING AND SHIPPING:

As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS.

If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.
