Back in the day, 7" vinyl singles were released in plain generic sleeves. Eventually, the records companies began plastering their names and logos all over the sleeves. Then, at some point, and I'm not sure when, the picture sleeve was born! A picture sleeve is colorful artwork, sometimes from the album cover, on the sleeve itself. The vinyl was usually standard black, but occasionally became colored vinyl later on. In the 80s, and before CDs and CD singles, the way to get your record played (or bought) was a 7" single. And the way to get noticed was a colorful picture sleeve!

Today, we feature SIX hard rock and heavy metal artists from hard rock and metal's glory days, the 80s. First up is Krokus, a Swiss metal band that formed in '75. Almost FIFTY years ago! Those guys are still around to this very day. They remade an old Alice Cooper song in 1986, and that song is the classic "School's Out". And they rock it! Backed with the live version of the Krokus hit "Screaming in the Night".

Next up is Bad English, featuring Neil Schon and Jonathan Cain from Journey, and John Waite and Ricky Philips from The Babys. (Cain was also in The Babys.) Deen Castronovo was the drummer for Bad English, and he's the drummer for Journey these days. So, the Journey Babys? Lol Those guys are here with "When I See You Smile". Backed with "Rockin' Horse".

Sammy Hagar is on deck with his single "Give to Live", from the 1987 album 'I Never Said Goodbye". Hagar was already in Van Halen by this time, but he owed Geffen one more solo record. Eddie Van Halen even helps out on a song on the album (but not this one). Backed with "When the Hammer Falls".

NYC glam hair metal band Envy featured the Stile sisters Rhonni and Gina. Those lovely ladies are here with Envy, and the song "I Believe in You", produced by Dee Snider of Twisted Sister. Backed with "Hurt Me", both from the 1987 Envy album 'Ain't It a Sin'.

And speaking of lovely ladies, we move on to Vixen, the all female glam pop metal band. They're here with the poster sleeve (a record sleeve that folds out to a poster) for their hit single "Edge of a Broken Heart", (backed with "Cruisin'"). The drummer, Roxy Petrucci, is from the metal band Madam X, (where she's currently at with her sister Maxine). This Vixen song was written by soft rock pop star Richard Marx. (Not very metal, right? Lol)

And last, but certainly not least, is Living Colour. The single is "Love Rears Its Ugly Head", with the album version AND the 'Soul Power Mix'! In a great sleeve with cool artwork. Loving Colour formed FORTY years ago, released their last studio album in 2017, and is reportedly working on a new album. They last toured with Extreme in '23.

Most of these records look shiny and clean, and may not have ever been played. Singles are usually fragile, and sometimes get scratched with only one spin, so I never played any of these. A couple may have light surface marks on them, but nothing bad, and hardly noticeable. The sleeves are in pretty good shape, and a couple look almost new. Everything's in great condition for items from the 80s!
