Picture sleeve 7" records are rarely released anymore. They gave way to CD singles, and then to streaming services. When they are released these days, it's usually to promote an artist's new music, and more of a novelty than anything else. But back in the 80s, a picture sleeve record was made to catch your eye in record stores, and to promote a single to radio stations. Up for grabs today is a pack of TWELVE vintage 80s singles, and EIGHT are in their original picture sleeves!
First up Twisted Sister, and their 1985 hit, the remake of the song "Leader of the Pack". From the album 'Come Out and Play". Backed with "I Wanna Rock", from the FORTY year old album 'Start Hungry'. In a cool picture sleeve! Next up is Judas Priest, and their 1986 remake of an old Chuck Berry song called "Johnny B. Goode", from the movie of the same name. Backed with the track "Rock You All Around the World", which was previously unreleased. The band Golden Earring is here with their single "Quiet Eyes", from 1986. Promo copy, so same song both sides. Queen represents with the song "Body Language", from the 1982 album 'Hot Space'. Backed with "Life is Real (Song for Lennon)". And that's one controversial cover!
Jon Butcher is up next with a promo copy of "Holy War", from '87. Same song both sides. Next, The Kinks are "Lost and Found", from the 1986 album 'Think Visual'. Promo copy, so same song both sides. Blackfoot is here with the single "Teenage Idol", from the 1983 album 'Siogo' (rumoured to stand for 'suck it or get out'). Promo version, so same song both sides. Honeymoon Suite is here, with their song, "What Does It Take", from the motion picture 'One Crazy Summer'. (Also appearing on their 1985 album 'The Big Prize'.) Backed with "Words in the Wind".
The band Firehouse is here with their song "Sleeping With You", from '92. One side is the album version, and the flip side is the acoustic version. In an Epic (generic) sleeve. John Parr is on deck with two of his hits. One side is the theme from the movie 'St. Elmo's Fire', and the song "St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)", from '85. Backed with the funky rocker "Naughty, Naughty". In a plain white sleeve. Dio is here with "Mystery", from '84, FORTY years ago! Promo copy, so same song both sides. In a generic WB sleeve. And we'll end with Dokken, and their single from '87 called "So Many Tears", from the album 'Back for the Attack'. Promo copy, so same song both sides.
Each one of these was never played by me. Single records were usually made with a fragile vinyl and could be scratched with only one or two spins. A couple of these have light surface marks on them, but most are shiny and clean. The sleeves are showing signs of wear, but almost all are still looking really good. Picture sleeve singles have become cool collector's items, pieces of rock and roll history, and really nice works of art. Grab this bundle of TWELVE singles today!
