The self-titled Metallica (aka The Black Album), the bands fifth studio album, became one of the biggest selling albums in history. The 1991 album has sold more than 15 million copies in the U.S. (the rare diamond certification) and 22 million worldwide. With some of the groups most popular and radiofriendly songs, Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters, Metallica peaked at #1 and brought the band solidly into a league all their own. Though a step away from the thrash metal the band pioneered, the album was nevertheless heavier than anything the band had yet recorded.
