Wanda Landowska's classic Scarlatti Society recordings of Scarlatti's harpsichord sonatas. This very rare item comprises five HMV 78rpm records DB4960-64 in a faux-leather carrying case, issued in September 1935 by The Scarlatti Society in a limited edition of 500. The set originally contained six discs; unfortunately, the sixth disc has disappeared somewhere along the way.
Disc 1 DB4960 Sonatas in G Major & G Minor (Pastoral) / Sonatas in C Major & F Minor Disc 2 DB4961 Sonata in A Major (Barcarolle) / Sonatas in F Major & F Minor Disc 3 DB4962 Sonatas in B Minor & D Major (Tempo di Ballo) / Sonatas in F Sharp Minor & D Major Disc 4 DB4963 Sonata in E Minor (The Farewells) / Sonata in C Sharp Minor Disc 5 DB4964 Sonatas in E Major & G Major (The Bells) / Sonatas in G Minor & E Flat Major.
Wanda Landowska was a harpsichord virtuoso, and these recordings, under the auspices of the Scarlatti Society, are probably the highlight of her recording career. The selection of pieces are her personal choice, and she wrote delightful sleeve notes for the booklet which accompanies the set.
Condition: As mentioned above, the final disc of the set is missing, but the other discs are in remarkably fine condition for their considerable age. They are in their original paper sleeves, and are still shiny with very few indications of having been played. The leaflet is naturally yellowed with age and has a little wear, but is intact. The box has some damage to edges/corners, but is still in one piece, and does its job protecting the discs.
For this item, which weighs heavy and will require extra protection during shipment, the postage cost will be higher than my normal rates. UK postage will be £7.50. Postage abroad will be via a tracked service and will be £15 to Europe and £22 for the rest of the world.
