The Mansfield State Training School and Hospital was a state run facility which provided institutionalized care and education for the developmentally disabled. Formed from the union of the CT School for Imbeciles in Lakeville and the Connecticut Colony for Epileptics in 1917, its population of clients grew as large as 2200 in the early 1960s. As with many, if not all, institutions of the time, budgeting and staff shortfalls left these warehouses of forgotten humanity derelict: Mansfield shuttered its doors in May 1993 following the election of Lowell Weicker as CT's Governor, a strong proponent for the rights of the disabled.
This album was one of a number of wonderful projects promoted by Superintendents Neal Dayton and Francis P. Kelley in the 1950s and memorializes the great achievement from these amazing men and women. The MSTS band later performed on the Ed Sullivan Show to glowing reviews.
Employees could purchase this album in the gift store at Dimock Hall and many still own the album to this day.
Album Condition:
The album up for sale is in plastic wrap, and never been opened (NIB). It was recovered from boxes of materials thrown away after the school closed.
