Joseph Samson (1888–1957) was a French church composer and choirmaster at the Dijon Cathedral.[1] His books on church music include Musique et Vie intérieure and A l'ombre de la Cathédrale enchantée (1929).[2]

Arrival in Dijon
In 1926, he arrived in Dijon where it was anticipated that it would be necessary to give a successor to the chapel master of the cathedral of Dijon, Mgr Moissenet who directed the master's since its re-creation in 1895. It is this exemplary choir, composed of children and seminarians, who will have Émile Vuillermoz say: "Dijon is the Bayreuth of church musicians". Joseph Samson is then quoted in the annals of the time as the "Professor sought for many years, composer very familiar with the religious musical renaissance"; one of the best three or four chapel masters in France. For a few years he followed the singing lessons given by Mgr Moissenet and published in 1925 In the shade of the enchanted cathedral where he paid homage to his predecessor as well as to his work. Passionate about the richness of early music, Joseph Samson considerably developed this repertoire with the Maîtrise de Dijon. He made some recordings, the first of which in 1933 received the grand prize for the disc. The Dijon choir is probably the only one who then introduced the whole of this repertoire of the oldest polyphonists (late 12th to 15th century) to the office.

A man rewarded
In 1956, during the celebrations organized for the 25th anniversary of his arrival in Dijon, the personalities present expressed their interest in his work: Father Bardy, director of the review "Musique et Liturgie", Dom Gajard of the Abbey of Solesmes, dom Kreps from the Abbey of Louvain, Gaston Roussel from the Maîtrise de Versailles, without forgetting the testimonies of Roland-Manuel on behalf of the Paris Conservatory, and Arthur Honegger.

In 1949, Pope Pius XII awarded him the high distinction of Chevalier de Saint Grégoire, for his work in the service of sacred art; in 1955 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor.

Joseph Samson died on July 9, 1957 in Dijon. A week before his death, his final message delivered to the III International Congress of Sacred Music, at Versailles, sums up well the spirit which animated him all his life: "Quality is not the sign of an exterior and vain search , aesthetic, but essential research, spiritual. Quality in the work is the expression of Charity "

The composer
Critics always received with enthusiasm his compositions, always noting, for his religious works, a particular singularity "There is no doubt that these three masses are classified quite apart, and have no equivalent in literature musical nowadays ”wrote a critic in 1934. In 1956, it is an extract from his mass Amor a Longe which is chosen by the congress of the National Catholic Music Educators Association of the United States to represent the French school of composition .

A Quick NOTE ON GRADING AND SHIPPING:

As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS.

If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.
