78RPM Mercury 8013 Julia Lee, Lotus Blossom or Sweet Marijuana / Dream Lucky Blues, visual, medium V to V+
This rare c1946 great 78 shellac record is a V to V+. I will discuss this record in excruciating detail, 1st off this is the heaviest shellac record I have ever seen (and I handle 10s of Ks of 78s) --it weighs 10.5 ounces -I weighed a similar dated shellac Mercury and it weighed 8 ounces, big difference in my opinion--when I first handled this record I thought it was 2 - 78s stuck together (very thick) record--thickest I have ever seen. My photos above of the Lotus Blossom side show some cosmetic scuffiness--I just felt the surfaces (of both sides) with my index finger and it is smooth everywhere--even the small nicks on this are hard to feel or barely feelable--this is all surfacy (mostly scuffs). Graded Visually. This record is consistently scuffy and a mild to medium wear, no notable or big flaws, just scuffiness with some small minor nicks (barely feelable), see my 11 photos above. Labels and holes have mild wear.
I played the Blossom side and it sounded like an average 78 to me--no hang ups, no significant skips or clicks--few light clicks, I am not good at describing noise or hiss--my player is kind of iffy, probably has some--its all about filters on these things--this has some fluctuating stuff going on so--the scuffs may be doing swishes or hissing in spots. I guess you would call the play grade a V to V+ too--although I don't know how to play grade records- I am just a visual grader--but this is important record--so I attempted a play grade.
This comes from a great old Jazz record collection. I just asked my 92 year old dad (who got this back in the dark ages) why this is so rare and he said it's an early Mercury and no one bought it. Please email with any questions. Buy it now for $99.95, the best offer feature is a gauge/tool for me to judge demand on this great high demand 78--don't expect me to take fair offers ( I might but???)--this depends on length on sale and competition (right now no competition-- I think the last copy for sale was 4 years ago on an auction no one saw--hence the low sale price).
