‘The Smiths’: For The Smiths’ self-titled debut, the band used an image of 1960s actor and sex symbol Joe Dallesandro. A protege of Andy Warhol, it’s also Dallesandro’s bulging, denim-clad crotch that takes pride of place on The Rolling Stones’ ‘Sticky Fingers’ cover. Fast forward 15 years to 1983. A band from Manchester, England with the intentionally ordinary name of the  were preparing their debut self-titled album. Album cover duties fell to lead singer , who selected a still photo of Dallesandro from Flesh and cropped it so that what was happening below the belt line didn't land the band in court on pornography charges.

The authors of the Warhol exhibit catalog assert that "using this photograph for the cover illustration reinforces the sexual connotation of the song 'Pretty Girls Make Graves.'" Perhaps, but it's equally likely that Morrissey simply liked the photo of Dallesandro in the midst of oral gratification. The Smiths' and Warhol's worlds intersected again in 1987, when the band used a still photo of Factory superstar Candy Darling for the sleeve of their "" single.

As for Warhol, his last album cover was for a 1987 fundraiser entitled MTV High Priority. He died in February of that same year, as did the 12" LP cover's golden age, crowded out by the 5" artwork fronting the music industry's newest revolution, the CD.

Because most of Warhol's album covers from the '50s and '60s had print runs of 5,000 or less, one can own a fairly limited edition 12" square Warhol print (with bonus vinyl enclosed) for only a few hundred bucks. Of course, you already have The Smiths in your stacks, so you're well on your way to that Warhol collection already.
