* Alabama, with the second of five Hot 100 hits. "Love in the First Degree," their fifth No. 1 country hit in just 1 1/2 years, would go on to peak at No. 15 and become their biggest pop hit; it also did very well on adult contemporary radio, and I think "Love in the First Degree" hit the Adult Contemporary Singles chart's Top 10 as well. Alabama was really getting going as one of country music's all-time most popular acts by this time, with their unique blend of mellow love ballads, southern rock and traditional country. Justifiable members of the Country Music Hall of Fame. * Kenny Rogers, with "Through the Years." Kenny was in the midst of his country-pop crossover career, which spanned from 1977-1984, and even after that, many of his songs were purely pop-sounding country. Still, a great artist whom I have always enjoyed. * Ronnie Milsap, also in the midst of a country-pop crossover portion of his career. If the Jan. 23, 1982, show is indeed the one played, you'll hear the previous week's No. 1 country song: "I Wouldn't Have Missed It For the World." Amazing that this song is 27 years old and still gets a lot of recurrent country airplay on our local country radio station! The song also topped the adult contemporary charts, and peaked at No. 20 on the Hot 100. * Eddie Rabbitt, whose "Someone Could Lose a Heart Tonight" was nearing its Hot 100 peak of No. 12. On the Hot Country Singles chart, the song was in the Top 5, on its way to No. 1. Eddie was another one of those artists who enjoyed massive country crossover success on both adult contemporary and Top 40 radio stations during the early 1980s. * Juice Newton, the fifth and final country crossover artist with her enduring "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)." The song was in the Top 3, about to make its jump to No. 1 on Jan. 30. Keeping it out this week: Conway Twitty and "Red Neckin', Love Makin' Night."
