I'm auctioning one of my collection's treasures here. This is Blue Note BN2, Boogie Woogie Stomp (side A) and Boogie Woogie Blues (side B) by Albert Ammons.

This is a grand piece of jazz history which every serious 78rpm jazz or Blue Note collector will immediately recognize. This auction is about Blue Note no 2, a record you will very, very seldom see (on eBay). Both BN no 1 and BN2 were recorded in February 1939 and brought out together in the same year and sold on the counter of the Commodore record shop where Alfred Lion was earning a few bucks as he was just starting up a record label which would become the world’s most famous jazz label: Blue Note

The story goes that Alfred who left Germany in 1932 in 1939 still had a terrible German accent and ordered the labels for BN1 and 2 at a printer who also fled his country of origin. Both men, who were both struggling to make a living in the New York melting pot of that time, were not able to have clear communication about the intended colors, blue and chartreuse (which appeared first on BN3, after BN21 the label colors became blue & white and are unchanged after 75 years). This miscommunication led to a pink & black label which was used for BN1 and BN2 only.

Only 50 copies of both pink & black BN1 and BN2 have been pressed. They are both indeed extremely scarce and extremely valuable. I've not seen more than 5 copies being sold on eBay during the last 20 years. How many copies must have been lost over the last 75+ years?
