French one-man band Colder (AKA Marc Nguyen Tan) follows up his acclaimed debut with another strong set of electronic post-punk tunes. The atmosphere stays closer to Colder's moniker rather than the album's somewhat deceptive title, with Tan's detached vocals skimming over the songs' icy surfaces. The slinky bass riff and wavering guitar lines of "Losing Myself" recall CHAIRS MISSING-era Wire, while "Downtown" conjures up the paranoid groove of early Public Image Ltd. Though some tunes (most notably the disco-steeped "Tonight") sound blatantly retro, many of the tracks on HEAT transcend their late-1970s/early-'80s influences to darkly fascinating effect.
