HEAVY metal is commonly thought To have been pioneered by bands such as BLUE CHEERof course,BLACK SABBATH . The very First Album ToHEAVY metal 'though was Sir Lord Baltimore's 1970 albumKINGDOM COME , inA reviewFORThe magazine Creem. Like The aforementioned bands Sir Lord Baltimore was unpopular with TheofTheTime but unfortunately didn't haveTheSame underground fanbase, causing themTo remain obscure despite The qualityofTheMUSIC .
Taking influence From blues-rock and psychedelia, and performing in ASound quiteA lot likeAHEAVIER Cream andBLUE CHEER . Unlike BLACK SABBATH though, who created their gloomy HEAVYSound by slowingTheMUSIC down, Sir Lord Baltimore'sMUSIC is usually very fast-paced and energetic, withThe heaviness created byA high amount of distortion inThe guitar and sometimes alsoThe bass. As well as this, A huge amount ofThe guitarTo give it extra strength and power, and creating an effect that makes it seem asif more thanOne guitar is playing. This multi-tracking is what gives The MUSICof it's own uniqueSound .
The album is filled with powerful and catchy Deep Purple-esque riffs, as well as some fantastic Hendrix inspired solos and licks. None of TheMUSIC is particularly original, saveFORThe obviouslyHEAVIERSound , butThe band manageTo create their ownSound well with their obvious influences. As well as The guitar, The bass is very prominent. While it usually simply follows The guitar, there are some very impressive bass parts, such as TheTo 'Hard Rain Fallin'.
The drumming is usually quite simple but is fast paced and creates The EnergyTheMUSIC needs. The drummer, John Garner, also does The vocals, which apparently didn't work too well when they played LiveThe vocals are consistently goodOnThe album.
While Garner doesn't have A huge range or AHIS Rough singing is always totally powerful, fitting in perfectly withTheHEAVYMUSIC , with him almost shoutingThe lyrics at times. He also manages To sing well in AThe only calm songofThe album,The harpsichord and 12-string guitar-led 'Lake Isleof Innersfree '. At times though, The vocals get so manic they CanSoundA little silly, but it's easyTo ignore. Lyrically, Sir Lord Baltimore are much The SameLOVE otherPsychedelic themes, completely differentToTheChristian themes they've adopted after reforming (Without The bassist) in 2006. None of TheThe focus here.
While 'Lake Isle of Innersfree' is AOne problem withThe album: Despite being quite short at under 40 minutes, there isn't really much variety inTheMUSIC . This isn't A huge problem as all ofThe songs have fantastic riffs and little filler andThe album doesn't really haveTimeTo get boring, but it would have been betterTo have more songs like 'Lake Isleof Innersfree ' To break it upA bit more.
While at The Timeof release this would have sounded muchHEAVIER THAN nearly anything else, nowadays there isn'tA lot that really separate itFrom other hard rock bandsofThe SameTime . Because of this, KINGDOM COMESound very muchof itsTime , now fitting in completely with bands such asDEEP PURPLE . if You like 70's hard rock already there isn't really any reason not To like this, but it probably won't appeal ToToThe genre.
Review Summary: Very early HEAVY metal. Very HEAVY FORTime with some excellent riffs and guitarwork and decent but slightly inconsistent vocals. Recommended FOR fans ofDEEP PURPLE . (username345 / sputnikmusic.com)
