An original 3rd press of PPM in the UK on Parlophone. Matrix 1N/1N. This is the technical 1st re-design of the Yellow/Black label Parlophone that would go on to be the mainstay of all Parlophone pressings throughout the sixties. From a Beatles collector perspective it is very significant for being the 1st label re-vision after those extremely sought after 'Black & Gold' copies. So, going any earlier than this is going to get VERY expensive for the buyer. A decent playing 3rd copy is, perhaps, just a matter of a week or two from those $$$ copies. Value for money wise - one understands the logic in getting a decent 3rd [it makes total sense]. There's NO 'sold in the uk' statement and NO 'recording 1st pub' - this equates to 3rd press/issue. To give you an idea of how early we're talking about, here, take a look at the cover. This is, in fact, the original 1st issue **GOLD COVER**. The exact same cover that the 1st issues would have been housed in. Look at the Angus McBean credit. Instead of it starting at the 'G' in "Songs"..it starts AFTER the final 'S'. This is indicative of only a very 1st issue cover. We also have the original Emitex inner sleeve with 'patents pending'. So, 100% genuine and 100% complete.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex-) Ok, so records have no right to turn up from '63 with such fine audio! These early copies are famed for their indestructible qualities and beautiful audio, but even I was surprised at the audio on offer here. It's seen a moderate level of use - with a good few lightish marks, and a couple of superficial trails, per side. But I can guarantee any prospective buyer - nothing that gets close to the audio. Remember that this is an AUDIO grading. Don't expect the record to look mint - it WILL have a few marks [guaranteed]. But, once again, copies like this make you wish they'd kept pressing quality up at this level - permanently! A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT level of playback with a couple of slight deviations. By and large the audio is of a very high standard - one that totally belies its relative age. Just a warm clean delivery of some terrific audio that's gotta be pretty darn close to the original masters. Intro and inbetweens are really nice and quiet and the audio comes across with excellent clarity. Anything detrimental...>>? Well, I think I could just make out a couple of minor ticks in one isolated spot on Side 1. Then, just a few minor crackles during 'HONEY' and one or two in 'There's a Place'. But other than that - it is just a stellar rendition. CLEAN - consistently. Difficult to find fault really. Even the lower-key tracks play really nice and clean. Highly Recommended.
Cover (Vg-) Ok, so firstly remember...this is the original 1st issue GOLD COVER. Difficult to find in anything approaching acceptable condition. But I would argue that this specimen is very acceptable. There's nothing really off-putting. The front is mostly clean and flat without much creasing. Yes, there's a bit of discolouration at the top 1.c.m. and a couple of small knocks [no big deal]. The rear exhibits a bit of ageing - but is faring better than the average copy. Yes, there's discolouration in a couple of spots - but overall quite presentable [there's a record shop stamp at the top too]. There's edge wear, but nothing epic. There's a one inch wear-through at the bottom edge opening. I've taped this up - it is now just a cosmetic issue. The spine is in excellent order with all text perfectly legible. Very little wear except for the 1c.m. at the bottom end. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
Inner (Vg) A bit aged. But the inner bag is present. And there's no splits.
