Still SEALED

Thick cover and vinyl weigh in at 265 Grams. That and the tell-tale back-cover bottom edge text ("LINER: PS 582" flush left - and NO East Coast Printer's Union seal - usually found flush right) lead me to conclude it is a West Coast pressing, most likely pressed at famed H.V. Waddell plant in Burbank California. (Dead Wax inscription would then have a large 'W' or 'WC' etched by the matrix numbers - and bottom label rim text of "ZAL 9753P W".) There apparently were no Monarch pressings of this LP. I seem to remember this one coming from MOBY DISC shop in Canoga Park, not 20 miles away from Waddell - but that was a very long time ago.

CARAVAN followed up their eponymous debut with the cryptically titled If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You in the fall of 1970. If I Could Do It All Over Again... contains significant - and at the time, startling - progressions over their lovely first album. These include the intricacy with which compositions are sculpted around some of the finest instrumental improvisation in British rock at the time - or arguably since.

Caravan's uncanny ability to create a montage that effortlessly maneuvers through acoustic folk and electric progressive rock is perfectly exemplified on the "With an Ear to the Ground" suite. The extended instrumental passages weave in and out of each other, creating a hypnotic and otherwise psychedelic soundscape that would become a trademark of the European progressive rock movement'. Another epic, the mighty "For Richard" quickly found solid standing as the Caravan live performance closer for decades after first appearing on this album. Juxtaposed against these pieces are several shorter works, which in essence whet the palette for the longer ones. The title track, as well as "Hello, Hello" are perfect examples of how Caravan was able to one-up many of their progressive contemporaries, creating shorter and more accessible songs that garnered radio airplay -- resulting in a guest appearance that year on BBC TV's Top of the Pops program.

But it is of course the brilliantly woven and thoroughly entrancing longer pieces that made this album, Caravan itself, and the bucolic region of Canterbury, Kent, so beloved by progressive rock collectors worldwide. Indeed it was this very album that would be the bell weather, lay the ground and basically launch the rich field that would soon become known as the 'Canterbury Scene'.

*Consider what came before:
The 1st Caravan LP and 2 from The Soft Machine ...both great, one from Egg, one from Arzachal - and of course "Magick Brother" now announced the birth of GONG -  but none of these had yet to solidify many of the hallmarks that would come to personify "the Canterbury Scene"; particularly the urge and uncanny ability to stretch out and blend conceptual jazz, folk idioms and various other idiomatic genres with progressive and psychedelic moves and an undeniable tilt to the avant garde into a cohesive form that would morph into something previously unheard and totally original in its own delivery. - ahh yes: Delivery, but they would come a few months later... understated yet unabashed intelligence and devastating wit in complex composition, performance and kinetic interplay sprung up in the many new shoots in the field - but before THIS album, it was still scattered and waiting to congeal. "FOR RICHARD" and "WITH AN EAR TO THE GROUND" found here are arguably the ah ha! moment that the dam burst and all the rest would follow.
.
The Wilde Flowers was the seedling from which the early bands sprouted; though the Wilde Flowers sound was actually more R&B, things were about to get very interesting.
The Soft Machine and Caravan were the first major acts to come forth from the cradle, which, still new and fragile at this time, was gathering maturity with astounding speed and beautiful new sounds.
.
Uriel became Egg when Steve Hillage left and formed Arzachel (who to be fair, recorded their 1 LP in 1969 - as did the newly born GONG in Paris, with Magick Brother). Egg released their 1st 2 in 1970, the same year as this Caravan album. Indeed the DAVE's (Sinclair and Stewart - OK, add in a DAEVID) along with the PHIL's (Lee and Miller) have to be considered the early progenitors and Grandmasters of the intricate, fluid and eccentric compositional verve that was the main fuel of the exploding Canterbury Scene - along with the tragically short lived Alan Gowen. In comes National Health, Hatfield and The North, Wyatt's, Ayers' and Daevid Allen's new work, likewise important outliers such as Gilgamesh, Khan, Lol Coxhill, Stepen Miller and even the Dutch band Supersister (who were about to endow us with A Present From Nancy) were soon taking all of this to new lengths and unknown territory.

But I still maintain that it first all came together as an utterly unstoppable force and an undeniably mature new form right here on If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You.

Beginning to unfold an utterly vast melded record collection, ferreting out the duplicates and passing them on. My life-long best friend, who was a DJ at the Radio Station I co-founded in the 1970's - and who worked for me at my California record store in the '70s and '80s -  has now finally left this mortal coil, bequeathing me his deep Vinyl mine.

Always collecting everything he could - with strong tastes in rare Psych, worldwide Prog, Electronic, Space Rock, Classic '60s Rock, innovative Hard Rock, UK Blues Rock, Glam, Odd sounds, all things Tolkien and Disney, Hawaiian Slack Key and more.

We had very similar tastes - so numerous prime duplicates are emerging now. Many PROMOS, IMPORTS and 1st PRESSINGS will be included - indeed some still sealed.

Following soon, I will begin listing the LP's first, mostly at auction, with low opening bids - starting with the Prog, Electronic and Space Rock, then the Psych and on from there. You WON'T want to miss those!! (it may take me several weeks (months?) to list them all... still only part-way through opening all the LP boxes - checking Pressing, Edition and condition (most so far are VG++ to NM). It's all coming soon... .

Following the LPs will be either the CDs or the 45s next - and then ultimately the posters and other paper. Truly a great (and enormous) collection.

after thousands of miles, many days spent gathering it all and several thousand dollars spent flying out to California and trucking it all back to my new home, the tip of the iceberg now emerges. a few choice pieces off the top to begin. I'm not yet near ready for the full-scale auctions that are planned.

...still going through so many boxes, the process continues. It may be a while until I can organize my 1st auction series of at least 100 LP auctions at one time, but mark/save this listing eBay ID and check back.

Diligent collectors WILL be rewarded!
