Fritz Reiner conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. This Strauss recording uniting RCA star Fritz Reiner with the Vienna Philharmonic (one of Decca's star orchestras), was released in 1959, marking the first fruit of an agreement that in return for loaning RCA some of their artists, Decca was permitted to distribute RCA recordings throughout the U.K. and Europe. In addition, Decca agreed to record under license some of their own artists, in sessions paid for and sponsored by RCA, for release on the Red Seal label. High Fidelity, at the time of the original release, called it "as fine an example as we have of Reiner's preeminent place among the living disciples of Richard Strauss."
Recorded by Decca engineer James Brown in Vienna's Sofiensall, the sound is as tubby as a Bavarian burgher. The playing is, as advertised, first-rate.

As some audiophiles are aware, Classic Record LP sounded on 180 grams of vinyl (or less weight), much better than the later 200 gram versions of the same title. Apparently this has to do with the vinyl presses used to make the LPs when they were converted to 200 grams of vinyl. These machines have never been designed to treat the extra thick, 200 gram plates of vinyl. And just to beat from 180 to 200, it was very problematic. The vinyl was loud. There were urgent shortcomings. All in all, an inferior product compared to the somewhat less heavy but much better sounding 180 grams of vinyl. Classic Records came with all sorts of variants for their 200 gram squeezes - remember all this? If you've lived this period, you're probably wondering why there were so many versions of the same music made by the same company in some other vinyl brew! It was simple that the 200 gram versions were subject to the previous pressures on 180 grams of vinyl. This is the reason why the 180 gram versions not only cost much more to acquire now, but they did indeed much better. As a collector, you will probably try to see a few versions yourself, if Audiophiles would simply imagine what they were listening to - this is your chance to acquire such a title. This LP is on 180 grams vinyl. It is one of the first squeezes from this title and best of all, it is sealed on the factory side! Do not wait too long to get these LPs as the deliveries disappear. Wie einige Audiophile sich bewusst sind, klang Classic Record LP Titel, die auf 180 Gramm Vinyl (oder weniger Gewicht) ausgegeben wurden, viel besser als die späteren 200 Gramm Versionen des gleichen Titels. Anscheinend hat dies mit den Vinylpressen zu tun, die verwendet wurden, um die LPs zu machen, wenn sie auf 200 Gramm Vinyl umgestellt wurden.
