Anyone wishing to go as close as possible to those highly collectable Brown & Gold copies - might wanna take a close look at this one>>> You're not gonna go any earlier without spending a shed load of wedge $$$!
An original 3rd Mono press of PPM on UK Parlophone from spring 1963. Matrix 1N/1N. 'Sold In The UK...' is ABSENT and 'recording 1st pub' is ABSENT = 3rd Press. For PPM this copy is exceptionally early probably coming from just a couple of weeks after those famous brown and gold copies. The heavy-set vinyl comes housed in an original mono E J Day cover. We also have an original Emitex inner sleeve. So, 100% genuine and 100% complete.
Vinyl (Vg+/Vg-) Ok, so first things first - please be aware that this copy has seen considerable use and exhibits many marks. A couple of marks each side are feelable and do sound [see detail]. Now, clearly if you're someone who has a low threshold for this sort of thing - this copy is not going to be suitable for you. If, however, you're someone who is prepared to compromise you can still bag a very good value very early original copy of PPM. Remember, these early 60's records were pressed super heavy. They can take a considerable beating and still deliver a great rendition. In fact, I am saying it plays a steady VERYGOOD+ for large parts, but exhibits noticeable deviation in a couple of spots per side. By and large a decent player which knocks most of these tracks out at a decent standard without much background. These early mono copies really do have ace audio - and it is still very much in evidence [even on a much used copy like this one]. Clearly this copy is not going to bother the top grades. Expect a couple of ticks in a couple of isolated spots per side [really no big deal]. Only one track played sub-par...'Ask Me Why'. There's quite a bit of surface scuffing in this track. In the 2nd half of the track expect some crackle to become more prominent and a couple of clicks. Not BAD - but this track is sub-par all the same. The other tracks might exhibit a few crackles in the odd spot, but nothing upfront or persistent. The only other noticeable issue is two skips early in 'STANDING THERE'. They are early in the track and do not repeat. You might lose a coupe of words in the audio. BUT - the remainder of the LP [98%] plays through just fine. So, considering the vintage - and how close you are to an actual brown and gold copy...I'd argue that is very liveable. When on song this LP is more than capable of ripping it up real good!
Cover (Vg+) In great condition - most original '63 covers are absolutely wrecked by this point in time. This one has surfed through the sixty odd years in pretty decent condition. A couple of tiny nicks on the front - but is extremely flat and rigid [nice!]. Typically the rear is often aged to death - but this copy seems to have avoided the worst of it. A couple of grubby patches. Pinprick in the top two corners. A small missing chunk of top right flipback. The spine is 99%intact. Excellent rigidity [surprisingly so].
Inner (Vg+) Light ageing. Bag present. No splits.
