LED ZEPPELIN: SIX 45s ~ RARE PROMO 45  PLUS 5 FIRST PRESSINGS NICE 45 COLLECTION ~ w/ COMPANY SLEEVES ~ CLASSIC ROCK!
I've been going thru my massive vinyl record collection this summer and pulling out some 45s,  Promos and LPs that I thought that someone else would want for their collection. I've been collecting records for over 40 years and it's time to pass some of them on to the next generation of collectors.
This week on EBay I am offering up these 6 great, clean, original, vintage Led Zeppelin 45s. A fantastic group of classic 45s.
These are all original first pressings from my personal collection that I've had stashed away for over 40 years. They ALL come with their original, period correct company sleeves.
The Condition of the Vinyl varies from VG+ to EX but they are all quite nice and look great. I'll discuss each one individually below.
There are 6 different 45s in this lot. They include the first few singles they released in the early period and a few other 'classics'.
Led Zeppelin was not really a 'singles' band and they really didn't release that many 45s in their 10 year career. Even classics like 'Stairway to Heaven' were never released on 45 back then.
Led Zeppelin 45s tend to get overlooked by vinyl collectors. There were some real gems on these early 45s. The Mono sound of the early ones is much more punchy and intense, there were some unique 'edited' mixes, way before Jimmy Page started playing around with 'remixing' the catalog, and there were some great non-LP B-sides. For many years, the only place to find 'Hey Hey What Can I do' was on the 45 B-side.
These great 45s just ooze hipness, coolness and quality. Classic Rock doesn't get much better than early Led Zeppelin. Here's a little more detail on each of the 6 singles:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ARTIST: LED ZEPPELIN
'COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN' b/w 'GOOD TIMES BAD TIMES' (PROMO) WHOLE LOTTA LOVE / LIVING LOVING MAID (She's Just A Woman) IMMIGRANT SONG / HEY, HEY, WHAT CAN I DO ROCK AND ROLL / FOUR STICKS D'YER MAK'ER / THE CRUNGE FOOL IN THE RAIN / HOT DOG
~~~~~~~~~~~ GOOD TIMES BAD TIMES / COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN LABEL: ATLANTIC 45-2613 RELEASED: MARCH 10, 1969 ORIGINAL 1969 PROMOTIONAL VERSION
This is a rare Promo and hard to find. In 1969, not many DJs, especially U.S. DJs, had heard of Led Zeppelin yet and this Promo 45 didn't get much attention, not at first.
Later period 1970's Led Zeppelin Promo 45s are much more common as every station wanted one and everybody anticipated the next LZ release. In 1969, nobody knew who they were, yet, and many of these 1969 Promos didn't survive.
Look on the Interweb and you'll see MANY red/white Led Zeppelin promo 45s, but you won't see many of these first ones.
The Promo sleeve has a slightly different Logo than the other Red/White Atlantic sleeves of the time period. It doesn't say Promo, but this particular sleeve seems quite rare as well. I only have a few others.
The label states 'CSG Processed Mono Master'  CSG was developed so that stereo records would automatically fold down to mono when played on mono equipment, like most radio stations had back then. It saved Atlantic from having to spend money to Master special Mono pressings for their promos. It didn't last very long, as recording and pressing technology quickly changed.
The original Red and White Promo label looks great. The condition of the vinyl is VG+, a few scuffs and hairlines, but it plays thru fine. A few clicks and pops but plays fine. Plays Mono.
The opening 'punch' of 'Good Times...' sounds fantastic on this 45. This song really shows off the power of the band and I can see why it was chosen to open their first album. The 'suits' at Atlantic thought so too. It is marked as the 'Plug' side, not 'Communication,' which became the more played side on radio. Another great example of a 45 where the 'B' side became the Hit.
~~~~~~~~~ WHOLE LOTTA LOVE / LIVING LOVING MAID (She's Just A Woman) LABEL: Atlantic 45-2690 RELEASED: November 1969
This 45 is the complete 'long' version of the song. It's well over 5 minutes of crazy, swirling 'sex'. Unusual and 'ballsy' for a single in 1969. There were some edited Promo 45s and some Atlantic various artist comp LPs that had the shorter edited version on it at the time as many stations wouldn't play the unedited version.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IMMIGRANT SONG / HEY, HEY, WHAT CAN I DO LABEL: Atlantic 45-2777 RELEASED: November 1970
This is an original first pressing of this great 45 with the 'do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law' etched into the inner edge of the run-out groove. Only original first pressings had this.
It has the original pressing Matrix numbers ST-A-19953 / ST-A-20450-1
This was also the first appearance of 'Hey Hey What Can I do' which wasn't on any LP at the time. It's also in Stereo, which was rare for singles before 1973, especially non-LP, B-sides like this song was at the time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ROCK AND ROLL / FOUR STICKS LABEL: Atlantic 45-2865 RELEASED: February 1972
This was a classic, popular, Rock single when it was released in early 1972. One of Zeppelin's most powerful songs. The Stock copies of this 45 single were all Mono, which gave it even more, in your face, 'punch'.
This pressing has the first press 'AT 22399 / AT 22403' Matrix numbers and the hand-etched date 2-9(?)-72 in the deadwax
Rock and Roll' was originally issued in the 'new' blue, green and pink 'A' sleeve, not the older Red/White one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ D'YER MAK'ER / THE CRUNGE LABEL: Atlantic 45-2986 RELEASED: September 1973
This was another great single that had a 'better' B-side, IMHO.
"D'yer Mak'er" was one of the band's most mis-interpreted songs. The reggae style song wasn't their 'normal' sound and the Band titled it as a play on words/slang for 'Did you Make Her?', (sex), pronounced like 'Jamaica'.  I still shake my head when 'fans' and DJs call it "Dye-Er Maker".
Anyhow, this is a first pressing, easily identifiable by the '1841 Broadway' address on the label's rim. Later pressings had the Rockefeller address.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ In late 1974, the Band created their own 'Swan Song' label. They released their own music but also signed other bands and artists, most famously Bad Company and , Rockpile.
Zeppelin started releasing their albums and 45s with the beautiful, colorful, custom Swan Song label. It looked great compared to most plain boring record labels at the time. I can still recall how great they looked at the record store. They jumped out compared to other dull 45 labels.
The early 'Swan Song' 45s still used Atlantic 'stock' sleeves, which were colorful and striped. Originals had the 'Broadway' address. I've read that Zeppelin had enough 'economic' power to force Atlantic to replace their standard 45 sleeve with the plain grey late 70s ones that placed more focus on the record label rather than the sleeve. Those 'flesh' colored Swan Song record labels looked great in the new, plain, sleeves.  I've seen 'stock' copies of 'XX' with both sleeves, so I'll include both sleeves in this lot.
FOOL IN THE RAIN / HOT DOG LABEL: Swan Song - SS 71003 RELEASED: December 1979
This is a first pressing with the ST-SS 37379 / ST-SS 37380 matrix numbers. Another very long song for a single, over 6 minutes.
Sadly, this was their last single. The B-side is done in a cool, rockabilly style, showing that they were evolving and trying new things. Who knows where they would have gone next if John Bonham didn't die from his vices shortly after this was released.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PRESSING/PRINTING: One of the nice things about many Atlantic records is that they are easy to tell where they are Pressed. Often the Pressing Plant initials are printed after the Catalog number.
All of these have the 'SP' code meaning they were pressed at Specialty Records in Olyphant, PA. Specialty made many of the Led Zeppelin originals. I lived near there back in those days and likely explains why these are all 'Specialty' pressings.
CONDITION: The records are all in still in great condition. I took care of my records. The Promo is VG+, has a few visible scuffs and hairlines, but plays thru fine with a few pop & clicks. It looks slightly worse than it sounds. The rest are all a strong VG+, probably better, but I want the buyer to be happy, so I'll call them all VG+ but they look terrific for their age. Most look just fine. Old 45s were built like tanks; they hold up quite well over time.
I played them all, several times, before listing. They all play fine and sound great. A few pops and clicks, but that's part of the 'charm' of old vintage 45s. I'm sure you'll be happy with them!
The labels are all in great condition. No writing, marks or damage. They look fantastic. See the pictures for the best sense of condition.
I included white sleeves AND all the original, correct, Company sleeves as well. I'm picky about having the right sleeves on my 45s. They are all in nice condition. Everything is in clear outer sleeves. The cool old original company sleeves are rare collectibles in themselves.
