QUESTION - what is the rarest possible variation of Pepper in the UK at initial retail release date June 1967? ANSWER - Stereo 1st in a STEREO wide-spine cover.
THIS LISTING IS PRIMARILY FOR SOMEONE PARTICULARLY INTERESTED IN VERY EARLY PRESSINGS THAT ARE NOT NECESSARILY IN TOP LEVEL CONDITION. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE IS IMPORTANT HERE.
An original VERY 1st STEREO press of Pepper on UK Parlophone. Matrix 1/1. Stampers 2O/2P - really very nice and early. A nice solid pressing - but with an edge wobble issue [see detail]. The vinyl comes housed in an original Stereo gatefold cover with exposed flipbacks and WIDESPINE. The WIDESPINE covers were the very 1st aborted design which preceded the narrower retail release. There's the original cut-outs too, Sorry, no original inner sleeve.
Vinyl (Vg/Vg+) Is in nice condition despite moderate use. A few slight marks per side - nothing nasty. Surfaces could do with a wee bit of deeper clean - but are fine. FIRST THING - this LP is exhibiting edge wobble measured at maximum 2mm amplitude. This is visually noticeable - but audibly much less of an issue. Apart from the opening quiet run-ins which you might get some flutter - not all that much is audible. Under close inspection I can make out a good few slight marks per side, and one or two light marks - nothing heavy or troublesome though. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a varying level of playback between VERYGOOD and VERYGOOD+ level of playback with deviation in a couple of tracks per side. Intros and inbetweens are pretty quiet and the audio comes across with great clarity. By and large a nice player - but will not trouble higher grades. The only tracks I detected a bit of light background was in 'SLH' & 'WI64 & 'Mr Kite'. Mostly relatively minor. Slightly elevated background during ADITL - That's the only track where it's more noticeable. But still ok. 4-5 ticks early in SLH. So, you need to be someone who particularly understands the importance and rarity of this particular example. It plays well, mostly, - but you will clearly be able to purchase better playing copies for not much more $$$. So, you need to really think about if the rarity angle is what takes it up a notch and makes it interesting. Overall - still a very nice rendition from this highly collectable edition.
Cover (Vg) Given that this particular example is the rarest possible retail version - not bad at all. A great looking cover flat with just a couple of thumbnails and a couple of stress crease front and back. Remnants of a signature top right on front [no biggy]. The interior is looking superb. Some edge wear in places and a one inch wear-through at the foot of right panel. The spine is not too bad looking. Text legible apart from middle characters of 'Lonely'. Slight compression in places and two knocks that pierce the surface. Saying that, the spine and cover, still have very good rigidity.
Cut-outs (Ex) Perfect.
