~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've been going thru my massive vinyl record collection this winter and pulling out some LPs that I thought that someone else would want for their collection. I've been collecting records for over 40 years and it's time to pass some of them on to the next generation of collectors.
This week on EBay I am offering up this fantastic, clean copy of the First Pressing of the Original Soundtrack to "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." A Cult Classic!
This is my original copy that I purchased in New York in the Mid 70s and have taken great care of it since.
~~~~~ The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a fun, campy, bizarre musical that started out as a play in London. It was a huge success and then a Film was made, which has taken on a life of it's own and become a Cult classic. It's a witty parody of cheap movies, rock & roll, and sexual mores.
As a Teen growing up in New York City, I went to several local viewings of the Film and they were very strange events with people dressed up and acting/talking along with the film. Of course, I had to go out and buy my own copy of the album to learn the songs. I've had this record ever since, over 40 years now.
The Music is fun, risque, campy and very memorable. 'Time Warp' was a popular hit and still pops up on the radio around Halloween.
This early Ode pressing is described as the "definitive version of the Rocky Horror score"
This is a Original US First Pressing, which can be identified by the lack of a Barcode, the lack of ''Printed in U.S.A.'' on the back cover, and the "Manufactured & Distributed by Ode Sounds and Visuals" text and logo on the back cover.
The text along the Spine reads: "The Rocky Horror Picture Show - Original Soundtrack OSV-21653 ℗1975 Ode Records"
Following its initial release, the album was not successful, and was quickly deleted. Original 1975 First Pressings, like this one, are hard to find and a cult collectible. Over the years, as interest grew, originals became very difficult to find.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Some pressings of this album included an insert for joining the Rocky Horror Fan Club. From what I can research, these were added to later original pressings by Lou Adler once the show exploded in popularity, but weren't in all copies. This copy does NOT include the Fan Club insert. It was purchased in the Fall of 1975, shortly after the film hit the streets of New York.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you're not familiar with this bizarre play and film, here's the basic story...
On a dark, wet, rainy Fall night, a 'normal', innocent, recently married, middle-class young couple, Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon), are driving out in the Country, have car trouble and break down.
They find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere, but conveniently near the large Mansion of the odd Dr. Frank-n-Furter.
They approach the Mansion to use the phone to call for help and are invited in to take shelter from the storm.
They arrive just as Dr. Frank-n-Furter is finishing one of his latest experiments, accompanied by his bizarre group of 'friends'.
Brad and Janet come face to face with the cross-dressing Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) who proudly unveils his latest extravagant creation, 'Rocky Horror' (Peter Hinwood), designed with a perfectly sculpted, male body and created as the ultimate male sex symbol.
'Rocky' is unveiled and introduced to the occupants of Dr. Frank-n-Furter's strange Mansion full of bizarre, campy, exotically dressed friends, admirers, staff and groupies.
The innocent young couple, Brad and Janet get caught up in this strange world and it's spooky lair of odd people and odd behaviors.
Little by little, the young couple begin to be fascinated by it all and start to embrace the whole scene. Both Brad and Janet get swayed and seduced by the strange and charasmatic, garter-belted "scientist", Dr. Frank-n-Furter. Meanwhile, Rocky is idolized by everyone and roams the Mansion, creating his own 'adventures'.
It turns out that Dr Frank-n-Furter is actually an alien transvestite from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania and decides he wants to return there. A fight happens and some of the main characters get killed. I won't 'spoil' anything here.
The film ends with the Mansion 'lifting off' Earth to return home.
A very strange show and movie. It's a great, but slightly seedy rock ‘n’ roll musical.
'Rocky Horror' was created as a tribute to the old science fiction and schlock-horror B movies of the 40s and 50s. It also incorporates old 'Muscle' flicks and 50s Rock and Roll themes. It's brought up to date with it's use of Glam, Camp, Kitsch and Sexual liberation which were all the rage in London at the time. The film had, and still has, a revolutionary attitude to sexuality that permeates the whole show.
Tim Curry has called the film “a guaranteed weekend party to which you can go with or without a date and probably find one if you don’t have one, and it’s also a chance for people to try on a few roles for size”.
The costumes in Rocky Horror were also way ahead of their time and were a big influence on the coming Punk scene in England. Odd clothing, torn fishnet stockings and colorfully dyed hair was all very strange in 1975.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The musical, comedy, horror film 'Rocky Horror' was released in 1975, produced by Lou Adler and directed by Jim Sharman. The film is based on the original 1973 London musical stage production, written by Richard O'Brien. O'Brien also wrote the lyrics and much of the music.
The film stars Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick and is narrated by Charles Gray, and includes original cast members from early productions of the play.
Today, the film still has a large cult following and has been kept alive by a huge fan base and recent advances in the LGBTQ community.
~~~~~~~~~~ Lou Adler, record producer, owner of the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, and owner of the Ode Records label, attended an original performance of The Rocky Horror Show in London and, after being impressed, bought the American rights and brought it to his L.A. club.
He also obtained the rights to the original soundtrack album of the film and released it on his Ode label in 1975, this album, and it's been released several times since.
Adler was responsible for promoting the film and creating it's massive cult success. He remains active in his promotion and dedication to Rocky Horror, attending and creating special events supporting the film and its cult following.

~~~~~~~~~~~~ CONDITION: I tried to show good hi-resolution photos of the cover, labels and vinyl in my pictures.
VINYL: The vinyl is still in nice condition. It's still clean and bright, but does have some light hairlines and a few light nicks, not bad. You can see my close-up pictures of the vinyl. It looks pretty good. I'll call it VG+ to keep everybody happy.
LABELS: This LP had cool black custom Ode Labels with the 'Lips' from the beginning of the Movie. The labels are clean and without marks, writing or damage. The spindle holes show a little wear, but not bad. See my pictures for details.
JACKET: The original First Pressing Jacket still looks great. Clean and Bright with no significant marks, damage or Ringwear. No seam splits and the colors and graphics still pop. Corners are relatively sharp. A great early original copy.
As mentioned above, it has all the characteristics of an original 1975 Ode first pressing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ ** NOTE: I'm selling this rare 'Collector' record "AS IS" and "NO RETURN". It's rare and as described and I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Add this fantastic classic album to your collection today. It would make a great addition to any vinyl record collection.
~~~~~~~ I’m recently retired and downsizing and letting go some gems and rarities from nearly 45 years of vinyl record collecting. Check out the many other fantastic 45s and 33s coming soon to my page!
All records have been carefully evaluated and graded by me. I visually inspect all records under bright light, personally gently clean them with a soft cloth and then, if unsure, play them on a modern high-end turntable to get a true picture of condition. Please look at all the high-resolution pictures I added. They are all my own and are of the actual record being sold. The pictures are part of the description and can show small details, label variations, and condition better than I can put into words.
My grading is fair and honest. I have had over 3,300 happy and satisfied EBay customers over the years, with 100% positive feedback, and I have been buying/selling on EBay for well over 20 years, so please bid with confidence!
I'm a 0ne-man operation, this is a hobby, not my job. I do this for fun. I do this because I love music, love collecting vinyl and want others to share in that same experience. I take my time listening, researching, grading, listing and packaging. I will NOT sell any record that I personally would not want in my collection.
