~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've been going thru my massive vinyl record collection these past few weeks and pulling out some LPs that I thought that someone else would want for their collection. I've been collecting records for over 40 years and it's time to pass some of them on to the next generation of collectors.
This week on EBay I am offering up this fantastic, clean copy of Tangerine Dream's Soundtrack to 'Sorcerer.' It's a nice clean original 1977 UK pressing that I've had in my collection for many years and have taken great care of.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This album is the Soundtrack to American film director, producer and screenwriter William Friedkin's 1977 classic motion picture "Sorcerer," a gripping, intense story of men's struggles against nature and themselves.
Despite being known as a 'Horror' film soundtrack, the film is not really a Horror film; its more of a dark thriller, suspense, adventure film.
It's a film about four desperate fugitives, from various parts of the world, who don't trust each other, and are trapped in a small, remote, steamy South American town.
The only way out of their situation is to try to work together on a very dangerous, but very high-paying, assignment driving a pair of old, unreliable, beat up trucks filled with a cargo of highly-explosive old nitro-glycerine through 300 miles of dangerous rain forest jungle terrain.
The movie pits the 4 men against each other, against their trucks, the dangerous load they carry and the impossible jungle terrain.
The journey is very dangerous and the trucks could explode at any moment from the heat and the bumpy, jarring terrain. The film is shot in a bleak, forboding, treacherous world.
The title of the film, 'Sorcerer', comes from the name scrawled by the men on one of the trucks.
The most tense moment in the film is when the trucks slow to a crawl to traverse an old, rickety wooden rope bridge across a deep gorge. The album cover features the famous film still of the 'sorcerer' truck creeping perilously over that bridge. It's one of the most anxious and tense moments in the film and a perfect representation of the music within the jacket.
The plot of the story sets up the dark, tense, anxious, ominous music that Tangerine Dream created for the soundtrack. The music fits the Film well. The music creates the feeling of constant movement, as the trucks slowly work their way through the difficult terrain; a feeling of dread, as the music makes it clear that a major catastrophe could happen at any moment; and a hopeless, heavy-hearted feeling -- the sense that the journey isn't going to end well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Friedkin was aware of Tangerine Dream's music after seeing them live in Germany in the mid-1970s. Friedkin was impressed with their atmospheric electronic music and invited the band to score his next film, 'Sorcerer'.
Tangerine Dream were given the Script and told to create the score solely based on their ideas after reading it. They eventually composed 90 minutes worth of music for the film, without seeing any of the actual footage, which was just starting to be filmed.
Friedkin then cut and edited his film to fit their score rather than the other way around. Very unusual at the time.
The band and the filmmaker proved to be a great match. Tangerine Dream did a masterful job of creating a dark but vibrant piece of music that matches up perfectly with the film.
~~~~~~~~ The resulting soundtrack is a very dark and gloomy score. It was their very first film soundtrack, but many fans feel it is excellent, and the best soundtrack released by Tangerine Dream.
This soundtrack is performed by the 'Classic' lineup of Tangerine Dream from the mid-70s and includes Edgar Froese, Peter Baumann and Cristoph Franke. Less than a year later, Baumann would quit the band to go solo, and many fans claim they were never the same afterwards.
They were at the peak of their powers in 1977, having released the classic albums 'Stratosfear' (1976), 'Phaedra' (1974), and 'Rubycon' (1975) recently, which are considered the band's best works.
The music on this soundtrack sounds a bit like those classic albums, but there are hints at their early work, the 'Pink' years, when they recorded for the Ohr and Virgin labels.
Those albums mostly featured long, stretched-out, full side songs which allowed space for their music and sound to take shape. This soundtrack album would be different. The songs were much shorter, to fit certain scenes or moments in the film, but they still show that TD was able to float and show off their skills within the shorter time constraints.
There are no long hypnotic spacey soundscapes here, but it's still quite good, vintage Tangerine Dream. A great solid record from their strongest period. The songs perfectly compliment Friedkin's moody visuals and the film's overall foreboding tone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Although 'Sorcerer' isn't really a Horror film, Tangerine Dream sort of invented the 'horror-synth' soundtrack style with this release. The synth-keyboard sound found here would be copied on many future Horror/Thriller/Suspense film soundtracks for decades to follow.
This great album should appeal to all sorts of vinyl collectors. There's a certain dark energy that slithers through this album and it should be of interest to collectors of Tangerine Dream, Psych fans, Soundtrack fans, Goth fans, and Horror Film enthusiasts.
The music on this album is very atmospheric, creating unique, stark, ambient, tense backgrounds to the action in the film.
Creating a unique Atmosphere is a huge part of what Tangerine Dream was all about. Here they create a very dark, foreboding and suspenseful score, which fits the story of the script well. Pretty amazing considering they only had the script to go by, finishing the score without seeing any of the actual film itself.
The different layers that the 3 members of TD create all weave around each other and intertwine like vines on an old weathered tree. Some of the songs just chug along as ambient, avant-garde, driftings; others slowly develop and blossom into full sonic atmospheres.
The combined synthesizers and keyboards float along, taking weird dips, turns, peaks and curves along the way, just like the trucks in the film. Froese's guitar work adds nice touches throughout. At times, the music is ominous and somber, sometimes desolate, at other times the music becomes more ferocious and intense.
This soundtrack lays down a dark, mysterious, ominous, brooding, spacey landscape, full of sparse electronic noises, effects and rhythms. There's a sense of unknown dangers and suspense everywhere, which is a big part of what the film portrays.
A great soundtrack to a great, but sadly overlooked film.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The opening track, simply called “Main Title”, launches with a deep ominous growl. It's spooky and ominous and sets the listener up for a creepy and terrifying adventure.
“Search” is the most melodic piece on the album and has a nice sequence of moods.
In my opinion, ''Vengeance'', ''Grind'' and 'Abyss'' are the best tracks on the album.
“Abyss”, at over 7 minutes long, is the longest track on the album allowing TD to stretch out and develop their music. There's a great spacey part in the middle and the song is most like 'classic' Tangerine Dream.
The last 2 songs on the album really pull everything together. "Impressions of Sorcerer" has Edgar Froese adding some great electric guitar.
"Betrayal (Sorcerer Theme)" is a great ending with its dark, moody electronic sequencer loops layered with hazy, atmospheric mellotron.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There were very high expectations for this Film when it was released. Friedkin’s previous movies, 'The French Connection' and 'The Exorcist' were big critical and box office hits, but 'Sorcerer' was a commercial disaster.
Part of the reason was that it was released at the same time as a strange Sci-FI Western by George Lucas called 'Star Wars' which blew away any other film at the time and changed things forever. Another reason was that Friedkin tried to cash in on 'The Exorcist' by calling this film 'The Sorcerer'. Not a great title for this film at the time. Also, 'Sorcerer' used mostly European actors and didn't have any Hollywood stars in it.
Despite the film bombing, the soundtrack album did quite well. The album was luckily one of those great movie soundtracks that can be listened to as a stand-alone album.
The album reached #25 in the UK and it was Tangerine Dream's third best-selling album at the time.
More important to record sales, it was TD's big break in Hollywood with the band going on to create more than sixty film and television soundtracks over the course of their career.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CONDITION: I tried to show good hi-resolution photos of the cover, labels and vinyl in my pictures. This is a nice clean original 1977 UK pressing of this album.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ VINYL: The vinyl looks great. A couple of very very light hairlines and some very light wear. No significant scuffs, scrapes or scratches. I'd call it VG++. Very nice.
I tried to show some close-up pictures of the vinyl to show how good it looks. I'm sure you'll be happy with it. I've never cleaned it in over 40 years, just using my 'discwasher' on it. It would benefit from a good deep cleaning to make it look and play EX.
LABELS: This has the 1970s UK MCA 'Rainbow' labels. The labels are clean and bright. No marks or damage. The spindle holes are still sharp and clean, suggesting minimal playing and careful handling.
JACKET: The Jacket is still in great shape. This has a typical UK 'thin' stock jacket, but was made in the UK for export, so it's thicker than most UK jackets of the time. The cover is laminated on both sides, which has protected it, and it looks great. Bright, clean and shiny. It has the original JEMS New Jersey import sticker on the front. I got many records from them back in the day. Way before internet and Discogs.
The corners are sharp and crisp. Spine is 'thin' and UK, but fine, no seam splits. The edges have a few minimal 'creases' from simple shelving wear, but still quite nice. I tried to show detailed pictures of the jacket's condition.
There is one small 'nick' on the front cover in the bottm right. It's minimal and barely noticeable, but should be pointed out. See my detailed picture.
I purchased this at a record show in Manhattan in the mid 70s. It's been sleeved and stored properly ever since. I'm sure you'll be happy with it. A great original 1977 UK copy.
This is a great record to add to any Tangerine Dream, Psych, Soundtrack or 'Horror' collection. Original 1977 UK pressings don't turn up for sale often and it's a real gem.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ ** NOTE: I'm selling this rare 'Collector' record "AS IS" and "NO RETURN". It's rare and as described and I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.

I take my time listening, researching, grading, listing and packaging. I will NOT sell any record that I personally would not want in my collection.
