SPRINGSTEEN PICTURE DISC 'PINK CADILLAC/DANCING IN THE DARK'  RARE 1984 UK ONLY RELEASE (CBS WA4436)
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E STREET BAND 1984 'PINK CADILLAC / DANCING IN THE DARK' CUSTOM PICTURE DISC MADE IN THE UK BY CBS RECORDS ~ CBS WA 4436
This week on EBay we are offering up this very cool looking and rare Springsteen Picture Disc.
This great 'Pink Cadillac' shaped picture disc was released only in the UK in 1984. It's never been re-issued since and they are becoming hard to find.
The songs on this Picture Disc include "Dancing in the Dark" b/w "Pink Cadillac", the same as the standard issue 7-inch 45 single.
Dancing in the Dark was the first single released from Bruce's fantastic and popular 'Born in the USA' album. 'Born in the USA' was Springsteen's 7th album, released in the Summer of 1984.
Most of the album was written in 1982, a slightly quiet period for Bruce after the River Tour finished. Most Bruce Springsteen fans know that the songs for 'Born in the USA' and 'Nebraska' were written at around the same time, but they had a very different feel. Bruce toyed with the idea of releasing 'Born in the USA' as a double album, containing both the upbeat tracks and the darker material, but he wisely chose to  separate the material into 2 very different albums.
'Nebraska' came out in 1982 and was composed of darker, more somber material that Bruce famously recored on a small, personal cassette recorder he carried around with him. He held back the more upbeat and complex songs in order to work them up with his E Street band and release them on his "Born in the USA" album instead.
'Dancing in the Dark' was actually the last song written for the album, in the spring of 1984.
The song was famously written in one day, overnight, after Bruce's producer told him that the album lacked a good single. After writing over 50 great songs for potential inclusion on the record, Bruce, pissed off, went home and came back the next day with 'Dancing in the Dark.'
It's ironic that the last song written was actually chosen as the first single released from the album. Also, despite being told that the album didn't have a 'good' single, the 'Born in the USA' album eventally produced 7 different top 10 singles.
The final completed 'Born in the USA' album had a fantastic sound and feel, with its winning combination of Engineer Toby Scott, Bob Clearmountain's mixing and the legendary Bob Ludwig's excellent mastering. Back in 1984, the 'Born in the USA' album was the first American-made CD to ever be released. Before that album, all CDs were made in Japan.
The song 'Pink Cadillac' was not included on the 'Born in the USA' album. It was released as the B-side to the 'Dancing in the Dark' single and also on a 1988 CD-3 single. The song wasn't released on any Springsteen album until the 'Tracks' compilation of outtakes-and-B-sides in 1998.
The only way to get the song in 1984 was either on the American 45 single or on this rare and expensive UK import Picture Disc.
'Pink Cadillac' was a popular Springsteen song at the time, performed Live many times on the 1984/85 Tour and introduced with a long spoken intro about the Garden of Eden and Eve tempting Adam with a Pink Cadillac instead of an Apple.
~~~~~~~~~~ This is a copy of the rare and very cool Bruce Springsteen "Dancing In The Dark/Pink Cadillac" 45-RPM Picture Disc released only in the UK in the summer of 1984 on CBS Records (CBS WA 4436).
The record is basically the 'Dancing in the Dark/Pink Cadillac' 7" 45-rpm single but pressed in a larger format in the shape of a vintage Cadillac car. The center of this picture disc is like a standard 7-inch 45 record, but the actual size is about 11 inches wide and 8 inches tall. I showed it next to a ruler in my photos to get an idea of size.
This picture disc is a recreation of Elvis Presley's famous iconic Pink 1955 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Special with the 4 doors and pink roof. It was Elvis' very first Cadillac, the first of many he owned.
It's a very special, very cool, Special Collector's Limited Edition, UK Import Picture Disc 45-RPM record. A great collectable item for any Bruce Springsteen fan. It's a fantastic looking picture disc and would look great on display in your record room or just about anywhere.
This 1984 Picture disc was a very special UK 'Import' item released in 1984 and one of the only ways to get the song at the time other than as the B-side to the American 45-rpm single.
~~~~~~~ Unfortunately, Picture Disc technology wasn't very good in 1984 and these picture discs were pressed on a type of plastic that tended to darken and turn 'tea' colored if exposed to sunlight and air. Many of these picture discs, this one included, turned to 'tea' color over time. Many of the ones sold on Ebay show some degree of this 'darkening' effect.
This picture disc was hanging in my music room for many years since buying it 'new' and suffers from significant darkening, but only on one side.
One side is still bright, clear and colorful and looks great. The other side has darkened significantly. The sound quality of these early collectible picture discs is notoriously poor and they were never really meant to ever be played on a turntable, just displayed as art. This one still displays great despite some 'darkening' and wear.
This copy has some light wear, scuffing and scratches on the grooves from years of hanging on my wall. I tried to show details in my photos.
This cool 'Pink Cadillac' Picture Disk is being offered strictly as a Bruce Springsteen collectible, for display purposes only, and there are no guarantees as to playability.
Despite the 'Tea' staining and wear, it still displays great and I'm selling it with a rather low opening bid. I thought that there might be a Bruce Springsteen fan, a picture disc collector, or somebody out there that would still like this as a cool collectible to hang in their record room or office.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ ** NOTE: I'm selling this rare 'Collector' record "AS IS" and "NO RETURN". It's rare and as described and I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.
