CHICAGO BLUES LP Original Acetates: JUNIOR WELLS Hoodoo Man Blues DELMARK stereo
Two 12-inch metal-based acetates made by RCA Custom Records for the Delmark stereo album HOODOO MAN BLUES by JUNIOR WELLS’ CHICAGO BLUES BAND, from the sessions recorded Sept. 22-23, 1965, with “Friendly Chap” (Buddy Guy) on guitar.
(Although they are called acetates, they are defined by one source as "aluminum discs coated with nitrocellulose lacquer with acetone added for the sake of making a varnish."
One of the acetates has the Side One tracks on both sides, and the other has the Side Two tracks on one side only. On one of the Side One versions there is a tiny pinhole-sized hole in the lacquer on the first track which causes a skip; however on the version of the same tracks on the other side, the track is intact (perhaps it was re-cut by RCA due to the hole on the other side). As acetates made in the manufacturing process prior to the mothers, stampers, and actual vinyl record pressings, these are a few steps closer to the sound of the original master tapes. But they do seem to have been handled and probably played by Delmark owner Bob Koester to test the sound, so there can be some surface noise. (I played in spots only to test for possible skips, but I did not play all the way through as I wanted to keep these as clean as possible without causing any damage.)
The acetates have the following information typed in:
Delmark Records
Speed 33.3
No. T4RS-1737
Hoodoo Man Blues Pgm.
B911D-9612
Side One
and
Delmark Records
Speed 33.3
No. T4RS-1738
Hoodoo Man Blues Pgm.
B911D-9612
Side Two
The acetates are in manila Transco 12-inch sleeves.
These acetates are from the collection of the late blues and surrealist author and collector Paul Garon, who was an employee of Delmark Records and the Jazz Record Mart in the 1960s.

GRADING: LPs, EPs and 45s are graded M (mint), NM (near mint), VG+, VG (very good), VG-, G+, G (good), G-, F (fair), and P (poor).
A VG+ record may have some visible scuffs and light scratches and plays well with little surface noise. Scratches on records graded VG and VG- may be deep enough to feel with your fingernail, or there may be scuffs or scratches throughout that cause surface noise. On records in the G+, G and G- range the level of the music is still above the surface noise caused by scuffs and scratches. Surface noise is as loud as the music on records graded F and louder than the music on P records. P records are likely to be unplayable.
[+ and - denote in-between grades. Grades with a slash in between indicate the condition of Side A/Side B.]
