These records are from the collection of Spike Barkin. Records from his collection will be posted for auction on Mondays and Fridays until they are gone.
From 1965 to 1967, Wisconsin native Spike Barkin lived in London, England while attending film school. During that time, he regularly attended concerts at venues such as Saville Theatre and The Flamingo Club, seeing the likes of Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones and the Bee Gees. He continued his record collecting at this time, some only available at the London shops he visited.
Upon returning to the US (after some time navigating the Hollywood film world) Barkin worked for Festival Productions, who produced the Newport Jazz Festival/New York, from 1972 through 1980. It was there that Barkin made numerous connections and eventually started his own concert and festival promotion company, which he ran from 1980 until he retired in 2016. During that time, Barkin programmed the Memphis Music Heritage Festival, Jazz Charlotte, Watts Tower R&B, Gospel and Jazz Festival, Watts Day of the Drum Festival, L.A. Street Scene, Carolina Street Scene, Folk Heritage at Carnegie Hall and Roots of American Music Festival, presenting jazz, blues, rockabilly, Native American, Canadian, Comedy and Spoken Word performances. Over the years, he worked closely with countless artists in these fields, including Thelonius Monk, Sonny Rollins and many other notable names.
