Between 1970-1974 five albums and a handful of singles were issued under the name of Atomic Rooster, charting the singular musical questing of pianist/organist Vincent Crane for a kind of music-perhaps achievable, perhaps not-that would weld together the funk and soul of black American artist like Stevie Wonder and James Brown with the power and angularity of British progressive rock. Brave or foolhardy, there was nothing like it at the time. Atomic Rooster was originally founded by Carl Palmer and Vincent Crane while still touring with The Crazy World of Arther Brown, both men would remain in that band until June 1969, by which time they’d resolved to abandon Arther’s quite literally Crazy World and with a view of getting their own band together. Carl Palmer was fanatical about Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience and wanted to do something along those lines. They recruted bassist Nick Graham and set out to record their first album – Atomic Roooster was released in early 1970 to critical acclaim. Largely written by Crane and reflecting his darker preoccupations, it was a mixture of prog workouts. This was a very dark album for the time – kind of slit-your-wrists lyrics. And Nick Graham was kind of that way inclined too. A dark album from a much darker band-and that was part of the appeal at the time. But it was also a very funny band. So long as you kept Vincent off the dope he was fine.
Unfortunatly this line up would not last long. One of the first to go was drummer Carl Palmer-being lured away by Greg Lake to complete ELP.
This album is well worth the effort to find, It’s an import so you may have to special order. Every track is intence. Anyone into King Crimson and ELP may want to have this record part of their collection. (ytsejam.com)
