THE STATUS QUO "MESSAGES FROM THE STATUS QUO" Original U.S. 1968 stereo pressing on Cadet Concept Records. LPS 315. M-/M-.
Status Quo started life as a pop-psych outfit & had a surprise hit with therr first outing- "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" (#12). Their second single "Ice In The Sun" also charted (#70). They later became a "boogie" band attaining much popularity in England & the Continent but failing to catch on in the States. Chicago's Chess Records wanted to branch out from their Blues & R&B roots, forming the pop label Cadet Concept & signing the Rotary Connection (with Minnie Ripperton) & the Status Quo enjoying some measure of success. They even released U.K. psych legends Mighty Baby on the custom Head Records label. This album had 8 other very listenable pop psych tunes including a cover of the Bee Gees "Spicks & Specks" but none were of the caliber of "Pictures Of Matchstick Men". Released by Pye Records in the U.K., this is their only album on Cadet Concept.
10 tracks- Black Veils Of Melancholy, When My Mind Is Not Live, Ice In The Sun, Elizabeth Dreams, Gentleman Joe's Sidewalk Cafe, Paradise, Technicolor Dreams, Spicks & Specks, Sunny Cellophane Sky & Pictures Of Matchstick Men.
Cover retains its sheen & gloss but has a very minor corner "ding" in the upper left & a small cut-out hole drilled through the middle & the record label. Still a highly presentable copy- graded at M-. Cover also has a red sticker in the middle proclaiming "Featuring Pictures Of Matchstick Men" in white lettering. Record is near MINT with no scratches & a few paper scuffs that do not affect play. Very few spins. Cadet Concept labels are MINT (except for small drill hole). Not the quietest pressing but still sounds great!.
